That and the fact that he beat Maul and Vader the first time should clearly put him above Vader.
Dooku beat them both easily, then beat Yoda. Then they went off to train for three years to fight him 2 on 1, and Obi-wan still caved in seconds.
Dooku was the best and tragicest character in the story, and part of the mostly-ignored central theme of slavery and freedom. In most old epic tales, many of the characters are slaves. In star wars the role of slaves is played mostly by robots. The good droids obey their masters without question and play "good guy" roles. The bad droids are constantly rebelling and causing trouble. Dooku is a freedom fighter whose armies naturally are made up of slaves. Grievous, of course, is mostly droid. Some of the separatist leaders are at least part droid.
How many droids are there on the jedi council? Zero. The army of the republic is made up entirely of humans. In the republic, there is no droid without a human master ordering it around. 3po is shocked to see droids manufacturing droids because he views humans as gods and droids as inferior. The droids are the oppressed, the undercaste, the downtrodden.
The old, stale and arrogant jedi religion propped up this caste system, and Dooku rebelled against it while using Sidious for leverage, with the ultimate goal of weakening both religions and freeing the galaxy from oppression. Only blind do-gooder Obi-Wan's dogged loyalty prevented him from wiping out Sidious at the critical moment, after which Sidious had him killed off.
But even after Dooku's death, the separatists remained in essence a slave rebellion led by Grievous. When Anakin joined them, he left behind his life of luxury and privilege and returned to his slave roots. Loyally beholden to his new master, he betrayed and destroyed the droid rebellion and was recast in his true form - Vader, part man, mostly droid.
That sets up the main theme of 4 through 6, which is Vader's loyalty. Is he slave or free? Luke reaches the same point when he fights Vader and finds out he has been manipulated by the jedi, and is not as free as he thought. Accordingly he is recast as part droid just like Vader, and the final battle is the part-droids vs their master. Only when Vader's original droid hand is severed does he dare kill the emperor and win his freedom at last.
The three central characters, the only ones in all 3 films, are the slaves Anakin, r2d2 and c3po. The story is about them. 3po will be a slave forever because he wants to. R2d2 will be a slave because he's recklessly loyal and likes being heroic. Only Vader will be free.
