Have any legit coaches tried to go to Amish areas and develop any runners? With the lack of distractions, it seems like a good environment to find some kids that would and could really dedicate themselves to the sport.
I grew up (non-Amish) in an area that had alot of Amish people, many of the Amish kids went to public school up until the 8th grade. They dont go to high school. If they decide to leave the Amish faith at age 17-19 they will get a GED or enter a similar program before entering the workforce, starting a business, or going to college.
In middle school, their families allowed them to play on the school sports teams. Alot of them were really great athletes, some of them were amazing, and by amazing I mean future D1 caliber. Basketball is very popular with the Amish at least where I grew up, so many of them were good at that, but track was popular as well, most of the records are held by Amish kids, small school but the records are impressive.
In 8th grade there was an Amish boy in my grade who ran a 2:07 800 and a 53 400. We had some others go sub 12 or close in the 100m dash (which as middle school white kids is truly impressive), and we had another one high jump over 6 feet. Some of them were really good throwers too, and we had some good milers ~5 minutes. Overall they were exceptionally fit, strong kids for their age.
If they had gone on to high school some of them would have done really well.
