I guess the best way to discipline recruits is by yelling at them? Seems counter productive to me.

Yeah and why are our coaches always yelling things at us during races?
they need to break the will of all the white-trash guys joining the Army so they can serve "America" aka corporate interests
If our soldiers can't handle a little screaming from their superiors, how do you think they will handle combat? Do you expect the enemies of America to try and subdue our soldiers with the use of soothing words?
Fvcking idiots.
There is a very important psychological component to the yelling at basic training. It tells the recruit that the DI is in charge. Basic training is just that: learning in the shortest amount of time possible to become something useful. Yelling creates a very high stress environment which is conducive to learning quickly, it forces you to react and function under stress which may letter become functioning under fire. The recruit has to learn to obey immediately and without question every order with exactness. The DI isn't mad, the yelling is part of the indoctrination process.
Yelling does not facilitate learning.
All it does is hype people up and make them more aggressive.

No...that'd be bullets. I don't think insults play a very big role in warfare, actually.

Ha douchey spell-check fail. Way to go. I am really hoping you were joking.
Not as much yelling as you think. Sure they're hard @sses, but not yelling every minute. I mean, your lungs can only handle so much.

To weed out the libtard dope smokers and Obama supporters who have no business in the .mil
Semper Parataus!
Like PE class. That's all.
Because recruits are kids. They're not much older than when their parents used to yell at them. And their instinctive reaction to a yelling superior is to obey.
If they were 30 or older, the yelling thing would never work. No way. The DI would get beat up.
Because most people in the army are closet homos.
Youd be happy too if you didn't have to sleep anymore with 12 siblings in a trailer.
