Oh, and the quote of the day almost seems to imply Gregson has fared "slightly better." Than Webb? Not even remotely true.

ummmm......... ever heard of Said Aouita
Yeah, and the truth is that Wheating turns 26 in a couple months, so he is no longer a young runner. I know he started a bit late, but Wheating's best years may be behind him.
Medals?
Gold medal for choking at all of the big dances.
Certainly unmatched range in U.S. history, and remember that Webb was only 23 when he ran 27:34. Nobody has ever run that fast that young in U.S. history. Not even Rupp.
WEBB IS BACK, BAAABBBBBYYYYYY!!!!!

If you're too young to have watched any of these races, I forgive you. Here is a quick history lesson.
2004-2005 he was not in any way, shape, or form a contender for the win. Look at the field for the 2004 finals - a 3:32 runner would be very lucky to get in.
He was not even expected to make the final but he did in 2005 and made a valiant effort in the final anyways.
2007 he was a contender, but that guarantees very little. He ran one of the most aggressive races I've seen. In the end he was beaten by better competition - perhaps he was the 3rd-5th fittest man of the day but ran for the win. Lagat and Ramzi were certainly better.
In my mind, his 2007 final was closer than any American-born male has been to winning a gold in the last decade, 1500 and up.

Correct, until Chris Derrick. And no one in the world is faster at both 800 and 10,000, only Aouita comes very close. Rui Silva (2004 bronze medalist 1500) is the only other guy in the same ballpark, with a 1:44 and a 27:5x. I don't think anyone else is even sub-1:45 / 28:30.
Yeah, that's right, Derrick did it. For some reason I always overlook that guy, but he really has done great, especially when you consider he was overshadowed for some time by German Fernandez.

Centro has won bronze and silver WC medals with slower prs than that, just as Leo won Olympic silver.
Now Wheating seems to actually more talented and better racer than Webb, but is just too injury prone. So, it is unfair to Wheating to compare him to Webb.

Rupp was 27:33 breaking Rit'z CR in 2007, which was age 20 or young 21, in a race he won with ease in a big negative split that got him the cover of T&F News. But, it wasn't that Rupp ran fast young that always showed Rupp was going to be great, but that he ran made the WC team at USA's that year only losing to Abdi, and continued to make every WC and Oly team since. Running "fast" is only a small part of makes a great distance athlete, *racing* well is the most important part.

Are you kidding? Leo was nowhere close to having a shot at winning. Props to him for pulling off the silver, but he sat way behind and picked off the guys who actually tried to stay with Makhloufi and failed.
Centro was close in 2013, but you could still pretty clearly tell he wasn't going to win from a ways out.

In what way, shape, form, bizzaro world, or tripped up universe does Wheating have better racing credentials than Webb?

You're right. And Webb has won more major international races than Rupp, Manzano, Centrowitz, Wheating, Ritzenhein, etc. Only Rupp has won more US outdoor titles.

" ... slightly better" than Wheating is how it reads to me. And he'd be right
I believe I've supported my case enough, but as one further point: Webb was 2-1 against Lagat in 2007, all in big races. This means Webb fared better against the 32-year-old Lagat than Rupp fares against the 38-year-old Lagat. Let that sink in.

He would be right about that, but he seems to be lumping Webb in with Wheating right there as well.
OK, so Webb ran 27:34 at age 23 and Derrick ran 27:31 at age 22 and Rupp ran 27:33 at age 20 (just shy of 21).
Either way, Webb showed tremendous ability at 10,000m at a young age, and he also ran 13:10 at age 22. Webb possibly could have won medals at 10,000m in London and Moscow if he'd have been able to reach his potential at the distance.

Gee. You left out their 10k PYRs. Why is that?

Because their 10k PRs were not needed to prove the point that no one has a faster 10k and 800 than Webb.
