Ba Kay Lay?
How about his first name?

buh-kuh-le.....that's how Geb said it in an interview. The interview is from the Gaz de france website after his 2003 5k race there
Correct...
Means "he rose or grew"
Be - ke - le
is the "le" at the end "leh" or "lee?" And is it BUH kuh leh or buh KUH leh?
I will try and do it in a crude way. I hope it works. You prononunce the 'e' as in men at every instance.
Be-ke-le
Be'-Ke'-le'.
There's no need to guess, just watch Haile Gebrselassie say his name in the true way. Go to the Gaz De France website and watch Geb's video after his 2003 5k there, and question is answered immediately

Mike, do you have a link to that interview?
Thanks.
Christ, during the 10000 broadcast, marty must have pronounced his name five different ways--first and last name.
Mike, how do you get to the link of Gebrselassie?

Another spineless, anonymous deadbeat chimes in with his envy for those who work hard and acheive their athletic dreams.
Nothing new on Letsrun.com
Mr. Bautista is correct, I confirmed this with a co-worker of mine who is from Ethiopia...except I would spell it Beh-keh-luh.

I found the site link but there is no interview with Gebrselassie in the "Interviews" section.
bump
nope, all three e's are pronounced like the e in cerveza...or even the i in bird. Pronouncing it like the e in men is completely wrong.
nothing to do with the post here, i just wanted to clear my name, any one who knows who i am that isnt my post (same last name for those who dont have a clue what im talking about)...i think he's clean
After listening to Geb say it a few times, I would characterize the prononciation as something between:
beh-keh-leh
and
buh-kuh-luh
An approximation: Be ke le = Be (BUckle) ke (COmmand) le (LUsh)
The vowel sound (same for each syllable) is clipped and indistinct -- something between a short "e" (as in "bet") and a short "u" (as in "duh"). The accent is evenly distributed among the three syllables.
