My focus this Summer has been on improving my 5k times though tempo runs and speed work. I did a half marathon this weekend and it went much better than I expected. I went out steady trying to just get 1:30 and PR'ed by two minutes for 1:26. The course is rolling hills, but I was able to pick-up my pace alot in the last quarter for a negative split and still felt really good at the end.
There's a flat, fairly cheap marathon near where I live in six weeks. I have a BQ-1:45 time for 2014 (not sure if it will get me in though) and was considering doing that marathon to get one for 2015. I live in New England and I usually lose some fitness over the winter from snow/ice interfering with my runs, so a spring marathon like Boston is not ideal for a good time.
If I'm in my top shape for a half, will that translate into a new PR for a full marathon as well and should I capitalize on this opportunity? My base mileage is low (around 30mpw). Is six weeks enough time to log longer runs? Or should I stick to the 5ks and the strong half only means I would bonk around mile 20? Any advice appreciated.
