46.08 for Solomon. Very impressive. I wonder what Symmonds could run for 400m right now.

That's pretty good, but I am not surprised based on how he runs the 800. That might be his 400m PR, although I think he may have run some faster relays splits in college. Symmonds has always been a high 47x 400m guy and I doubt he will ever be any faster than that because he is an 800/mile type.
His reaction to the gun is slow. Great time regardless.

Why wasn't he using correct starting technique for distance runners? He would have got out faster.

On that video, during the athletes' introductions, it says his 400m PR is 45.98.
I'm gonna say that's a pretty average time, maybe slightly better than average ... for an 800 guy.
that kid from Mississippi State Brandon somethin from canada went 45.?? this summer. 46 isnt that crazy

average is about 46.high 47.low for elites

It's not super fast, but it is definitely faster than average.

close.

He claims he's done his fastest 200's ever this past year, "21-22 seconds." Assuming this is a rolling start I would think this indicates at least 46-high for him?
slow start
i think running the 400 infrequently didn't help - not great at pacing them - went off more like he was running a 800
i think if he'd been inside conrad, he wouda had someone to chase & gone out harder & probably won
he looks capable of mid/high-45 in an ideal race ( probably just needs a coupla runs & inside the big guns )
he really shouda run a tactical 800 in moscow as i don't think anyone woud beat him in a sprint in a 1'45+ race

ummmmm, have you heard of Mo Aman?
He'd be a much better 800 meter runner if he actually endurance trained for some 1500 races rather than messing with this B-list 400 meter crap.

13 posts. It took 13 posts to reach the standard response to any and and all 800 runners.
You're slipping LR.
Clearly you understand nothing about 800m running.
Symmonds would eat Solomon alive in a 1:45 race, as has been shown this year.
Out in 52-53 takes way more out of Solomon. Symmonds can keep up such a pace for far longer, and thus has more gas in the final 200.
That's the whole reason that these 400/800 types go out so fast. Going out in 51.0 instead of 50.0 is absolutely stupid for them because their aerobic system gets sapped almost equally, which is why you will never see a guy like Solomon even split or negative split even a slow race.
Duane is only .48 slower than Rudisha over 400m, so I'm not sure why people are saying his 400m time is not that impressive. He had a horrible start in that 45.98 race, so I'm sure he could run 45.5 with a standing start(like Nick did when he ran his 47.4 last year).
He ran 3:48 way back in 2008, so I'm sure he'd run low 3:40 now. I've seen him run well under 3min for 1200 as a part of a workout.
Also not sure why people thing that Duane doesn't do any endurance workouts. While they might not be mile repeats or tempo runs, the workouts Johnny's guys do have you on the track for well over an hour and the total volume is a lot higher than you'd think. Look at the threads re Mihaly Igloi to get a better understanding of these workouts.
David Rudisha ran 45.50 3.5 years ago in February.
46.08 is not that impressive for a speed-based 1:42 800m man. This was clearly just an average effort for Duane.
But as you said, he can probably run 45.5, so people really won't be impressed unless he runs about that.

We have proof he can run 45.98. You think he can run faster. OK you win!
