You were ok for a high schooler
Too bad your state denied you and other HSers the opportunity to run the Mile. A shame.
If you are a girl, amazing.
If you are a guy, and also ran 46.XX for 400m, amazing.
If you are a guy and that is your best event, you should try to run in college unless you go to a Division 1 school that goes to XC nationals most years.
Allows you to be a walk on at UC Berkeley.
4:25 today is comparable to 4:55 40yrs ago. So, it's basically middle of the road.
If you ran 4:25, then you should know enough about the sport to know how good that makes you. Did you ever run in any meets? It seems safe to assume that you did. This is all the info you should need.
Anyways, you would be be a state qualifier in almost any state and a state placer in many smaller classifications. 4:25 is likely among the top 1% of all high school runners.
Everyone ran 4:30 in high school.

Why so? Better training, competition, etc., today compared to back then?
I ran 4:34 in 1983, 30 years ago. So that's like 4:15 today? Or am I misunderstanding you?
I ran 4:21 in 1983, so was I really pushing sub-4? I should have kicked harder!
4:25 is good
4:15 is very good
4:05 is great
Sub 4 you're a national prep legend

You were probably one of the guys 100m ahead of me in my last HS race. I'll never forget my dad asking - as I lay on the ground in pain under the stadium only minutes after the race - 'Why'd you let that guy pass you?'

Yeah, just like everybody here currently runs a 14 minute 5k and makes over $250k/year.

About as good as the average 4:25 guy.
Your welcome.

So sayeth Frank Shorter.
And from his perspective, he was right.
4:25 is PLENTY good. High school times are not a direct indicator of your ultimate success (within reason- doubtful a 10-minute miler would ever be world class later in life). It just depends on your individual development. Some top world class athletes were not overly impressive in their high school years, mainly because they were "late bloomers", reaching physical maturity later than most.
But 4:25 does indicate some level of talent, you are certainly not a plodder.
You can have a good career at DIII level.
You might make all conference at DI
These are notable accomplishments. You probably won't be elite though. But that doesn't mean you can't do some excellent running.
The sad truth about track and field is that you're never good...
If you run 4:40 and become the best guy at your school, you're still not good for you league
If you run 4:25 and you're good for your league, you're still not good for your state
If you run 4:15 and your good for your state, you're still not good at big invites
If you run 4:10 and are good at big invites, you're still not good at nationals
If you run 4:05 at nationals, you're still not good all-time
If you run 4:00 and you're the best kid in the country and one of the beat all time, everyone asks, "is he actually the real deal? Or will he be a bust in college?" And then you show up to college and you fall back several rungs...you're back to being not good enough to make nationals
The cycle continues: when you're Mo Farah, everyone accuses you of being overrated, being not good in fast races, and certainly not being good the way Bekele and Haile were good (and even for them, people will claim drugs, saying again, "hmm, they performed well...but they must have cheated..they really weren't that good.")
Maybe Seb Coe was good. He might be the only one.
This was not my best event. I ran 1:57 going out in 61.5 so I'm more proud of that time to be honest.

Well said, sir.
