There are no Oregon HS runners at the University of Oregon

There's always Oregon State, and they're going to eventually bring back men's distance.

I was in Eugene last week for work. It's a gross little town, and I couldn't wait to leave.

While he never ran cross, Elijah Greer was from Oregon.

It's not the school's fault. It's your own fault. If you would train your team to be fast enough then UO would gladly take them. Get better coaching skills.

Honestly Oregon just hasn't been good at cross in the past years.

Kenny Klotz was running 14:30's in cross his senior year. When's the last time a state champion has broken 15:00?

While it would be nice to see more in state runners on the team, the runners have to be fast enough in order to make the team.

I didn't realize that. Kind of weird to read. But Oregon is a top flight program and I suppose that there will be some price to pay for that - and losing the local kids appears to be part of the price.

Current roster includes nine males and four females from the state.

Bryce Burgess ran at the West Regional meet in 2010. Matthew Melancon was 4th for the Ducks at the West Regional and 2nd at the NCAA meet last year. Cole Watson ran at the West Regional meet last year.

It is a fine balancing act between a national caliber team and local talent. Up until the current crop of athletes, Oregon hasn't had many national caliber female athletes in recent years (Maag, Tyerman, and a few others have run at the NCAA meet, but not many). The men have also been in a bit of a slump in the longer distance department (look at the Borderclash results). I'd feel worse about the lack of Oregon runners if they were lighting up rosters for other teams at the NCAA meet, but for the most part, that isn't the case.

I'm not sure what the OP is referring to as their actually are Oregon kids on the roster. They might not be the top/fastest runners but who's fault is that?

The high school scrubs from Oregon should go to a JC and show they can do something. Lots of Oregon runners went to Lane CC before Oregon. Oregon even has a developmental club teAm that Tom Heinonen coaches. A couple of runners have moved up from the the club team to get shots on the "varsity" team after they demonstrated a modicum of talent and grit.

Oregon is playing for keeps. They owe nothing to 3:55 1500/8:50 3k runners who only screw up their Title IX compliance

1 of 15 out of state and he is a grad student

It will be difficult if the school keeps offering xfers from places like UConn!

With its stunning assets Oregon is going to attract out-of-staters from higher pop' centers who are going to be more talented than kids from in-state.

There are several good underclassmen who I'd think will be offered in the coming seasons.

A couple things:

1. This is the State of Oregon's only real D1 team for men. Portland State has a team but it is not fully funded and does not compete at the same D1 level. The state should provide an opportunity for its residents to compete at a national level. Just letting a couple guys walk-on each year and rest on the bench is not a real opportunity.

2. The spirit of school competition is to have "our best students" go up against "your best students". I think that can include some out-of-state guys but when the whole team is made up of transfers and other mercenaries it goes against the spirit of competing for your school and supporting your local team.

The University of Oregon should not operate as a semi-pro team. It's not serving Oregon students and is not interesting from a fan perspective. No matter how good the in-state kids are, if UO is going to take the top HS, JUCO and transfer students each year it's only going to be the rare Oregon athlete that makes it.

And just what is your point? It was already responded that there are at least 9 men from Oregon on that squad and four women on that squad. University of Portland offers Division I Cross Country. How many Oregon kids on their team? Off the top, I recall some Oregon kids who have been on the team since Rupp graduated. Let's start with a world champion named Ashton Eaton, and how about NCAA champion Elijah Greer. Matt Melancon and Dakotah Keys (Pac 12 champion), certainly travel with the team. There are several other good Oregon kids such as Tim Costin, and a raft of incoming freshmen. Your knowledge of Oregon track is lacking, and if you are a coach, I'd bet that you aren't much of one.
