wariner is the real deal
wariner is the real deal
not to quickly
I'll be interested what if he can break 20
I just hope that he doesn't gain 20 lbs of muscle and look like Kenteris in the next few years....or else then I'd be suspicious...
4 more years of PROPER training and he'll break that record of the great.....Kipketer....1:40point!
He's already within a second of the 400 record. Not clear that he needs more bulk. Should be running in the 43s soon.
I believe JW is clean. I believe MJ was anything but clean. It is completely unfair to compare a clean athlete to a "doped-to-the-gills" athlete. Very few female sprinters measure themself against Flo-Jo or Koch, and for good reason...
I completely agree. I like JW and am sure MJ was ***** to the gills. Plus short track, too hard track....
remember steve lewis?
oly champ at age 19, in 43+.
got another medal in '92, but never threatened the WR.
Its possible if gets physically stronger like MJ did in the mid 90s. But his speed may be a limiting factor. MJ was a sub 20 guy in his sleep. Also, the difference between 44.00 and 43.18 is huge. MJ was a sub 44 runner in 1992, and it took 7 years to get down to 43.18. A lot depends on getting the right race at the right time. I think Johnson was in sub 43 shape in 95-96 but he didn't blast the 400m at the worlds or olympics races because he was saving something for the 200m. If Wariner keeps running for another 4 years, keeps improving, bulks up alittle bit (10 lbs) and gets a race with ideal conditions, I'd say he has an outside chance at the record.

Wariner has already broken one MJ record - the Baylor school record. MJ's best @ Baylor was 44.21.
bmd and others,
I'm no sprints expert but why does he need to bulk up? I can see the reason in the 100 and maybe the 200 but why the 400? It seams to me that if he keps his upper body slender like it is he would have less weight to cary around. Look at his legs and but. He is pritty jacked on the lower body.
We'll get an idea by seeing how much he improves next year. I'm guessing that he'll need a setting like the WC or OG, so I'd say the 2007 WC or 2008 OG.
As far as bulking up, it looks to me like he has the stamina to pull away in the end, but not necessarily the top end (yet) to reach 43-low. And to improve the top end you need acceleration power to get to the point that addiontal top end speed is trainable. At 6 seconds, sprinting becomes partially lactic, and you need the alactic power to make your legs go fast enough for long enough to train the neuromuscular system to turn over faster (then you have to develop speed endurance of the higher speed, which, in turn, can make even higher speeds reachable). The additional acceleration power requires strength--not necessarily the huge bulk for block clearance, but more strength and bulk than Wariner has now.
why do we all speculate what wariner needs to do, im pretty sure he knows what is best, considering he has strong backing with johnson and his baylor coaches, i think they have more knowledge at the elite 200m to 400m level than a bunch of internet forum whores
