I dont think you are being realistic with yourself. That would be the average HS or college runner. A typical runner has pretty much everything listed for a triathlete. Also, it is important to note that USAT found the average income of triathletes to be $126,000. More money=more gear.
You've obviously never competed in an ironman to think most of that stuff cannot be beneficial. It isnt a local 5k, buddy. BTW I'd smoke you in either category.

My typical outfit for running in FL 9 months out of the year:
- 3" split shorts so I can move - Preferably black, but I do have them in blue, orange, and grey.
- Running shoes of some sort because I am not a barefoot runner - I run in NB so usually its the 2nd or 3rd version of the 890, but I do wear shoes specific to what type of run I am doing and I will wear the MT110 on the roads if I feel like it.
- GPS watch to track all those miles I run - Curretly a Soleus 2.0, but I have used and been happy with a Garmin 210.
- Sunglasses to protect my eyes when its sunny - Usually Tifosi Vogel, but I will wear my black Wayfarers. Now that I have glasses I will wear those because they basically are Wayfarers and I have Transitions lenses so they are sunglasses too.
- Insect protection and sunscreen - The next time I hit the trails I will wear my Columbia Insect Blocker jacket. Its a micro mesh that's treated with Permethrin. I hate deer and horse flies, Mosquitoes, and ticks.
I'm a typical runner and wear the same simple outfit.
shorts
technical shirt (optional in summer)
cheap garmin watch
super thin no show socks
various brands/colors of shoes (different pair each day)
In the winter I throw on a hat and gloves and long sleeve base layer.
Just because there are runners who wear all that crap does not mean it's a typical runner. Tri geeks are way more into gear and tech than runners. That's a fact. There are exceptions of course, but it's a safe generalization.
This is correct.
Most triathlete tend to wear a lot more of OP's list at any given time than a runner. Runners may have a gps watch/arm warmers, but in aggregate runners are simpler. They will have less random bs on their body.
Also, the replies from overly defensive tri guys are hilarious. Oh and, people only do tri because they aren't talented enough for track/too old for track/running.
How about a crossfitter?

I admit to forgetting about a lot of crossfitters having a camera to videotape workouts. That's douchey, but otherwise they're pretty good apparel wise. I see videos of people wearing the compression socks, have never seen it by me.
My greatest dilemma is why guys that are clearly out of shape ride their bikes around with these singlets that have fake sponsors all over them. Do they think people are buying that they're part of an elite team? Please cyclists, for your own good, lose that mentality. You are being continually laughed at and mocked by the same people you think you're impressing.
Typical Letsrunner and poster here. I wear:
split shorts, no socks, racing flats for almost all runs except if I wear a weighted backpack then I wear trainers, cotton tee that I hide in a bush or behind a tree near the beginning of loop, carry either an iphone for gps or watch for time but, never both. Oh but, I poop at home before I run - that makes my atypical.

The typical college runner doesn't wear a hydration belt or heart rate monitor. GPS watches are becoming more common, but I wouldn't say even close to the majority of college runners use one. Also, what runners train in calf sleeves? To the poster who mentioned Solinsky: he typically runs in compression socks, which are differen than calf sleeves even if they perform the same function. Very few runners run in running hats. Triathletes are all about the running hat.

It makes no sense to compare triathletes with runners. A typical runner is competing for 5-40 minutes. A triathlete is competing for HOURS. Doesn't it seem reasonable that they might need more stuff than a runner considering the difference in exertion times?

I was under the impression the OP was just talking about runner vs. triathlete on your average training run. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to compare them like this.
