She went out to slay her rivals from the gun and to win Gold, not a runner up medal but Gold. She may have died in the homestretch but the bish went down fighting and fight she did like a lion. I salute this woman's gold medal like performance.

I salute Montano's ability and her guts and her willingness to lay everything on the line. It takes guts to lead like that because if you fail there's no one else to blame. It was 100% on her. It also took guts to talk to the press afterwards. I also just like her.
However, congratulations on an excruciating 4th place finish seem out of place. Respect, yes. She gets that in spades from me. I'll save the congratulations for when she medals in a race, which I think she still will do.
No. The OP is suffering from Prefontaine Syndrome, which is decades-old and ill-advised and yikes, can't we just put an end to this nonsense already?

Yeah, it takes balls to not medal, falling pathetically to the ground at the finish line like a clumsy fool after busting out to a ridiculous lead in the first 200 meters, like the douchebags in the middle school PE mile who finish with a 13-minute mile.

"Guts" don't mean jack. Successful athletes are the ones who are well-trained AND implement a decent strategy. Montano runs like a 14 year old. Completely idiotic.
What Montano did was neither idiotic nor brave. It is what she does in every race.
Montano is a 400/800 type. She will never run even splits in a fast race. She cannot sit and kick. Sitting and kicking is not always better in the 800m, which is why it is such an exciting race.
Montano failed in Moscow, but she will come back stronger.
nobody should praise her for going out fast. If she had won the race, nobody would be saying she's an idiot for going out so hard. on the day, she couldn't hang on.

She runs like a lunatic. Period. It's not gusty at all. She loses every time she runs like this on the world stage. I knew she was not going to medal.
Hopefully for her this will be a wake up call for her.

The 800 is a relatively easy race to front run. You led for about 300 (first 100 in lanes), and then it's the last lap.
It's not guts, it's just a the only good strategy for someone with more speed than strength. That may sound counter intuitive, but it's not. A speed runner can not run slow, then save it all for a faster kick, because they lose their speed advantage even with a relatively slow pace for the first lap. They need to get all their speed advantage in early while they still have it, then dare everyone to catch up.
Every 800 runner who is more of a 400 guy runs this way. As do most 400 guys who are more 200 guys.
Unfortunately, during the WC, they only give out pages for medals. And to medal you have to be in the top 3.
Love it or hate it...that's the sport of track & field. It's black and white. There aren't style points.

I have already tried to explain this to them, but it's way above their heads. They're distance runners.
If it weren't for the Kenyan's dream performance, they'd all be calling Montano a hero for leading the US to 2 medals.

Thanks Miss Montano for making the first 4/5ths of this race especially exciting. We've had lots of great finishes/sprints to the finish line but only after suffering through laps of slow monotony (think NBA), but you had me on my feet the whole race yelling "Hang on girl, hang on!!"
She needs a new coach! However,since she refuses to change her tactics none of the "Big Time" coaches will touch her.
How I wish every championship distance race has a Montano, we will
be entertained.I salute her much like I did Rudisha in London fearlessly
taking it out and was rewarded.Montano will not fade in one of this races
and will be deservedly rewarded.
