This is an important thing to highlight for young racers: If you have a plan, follow the plan. GET PHYSICAL if you have to and defend your ability to execute.
It's not dirty...it's part of the sport.

Maybe in another year, with more maturing and more experience, Mary will be able to give it back to her. I think Mary and Salazar had the right idea--got to the front and slow it down--but she cut in a little too close. Mary probably misjudged a bit how fast people go in a world championship final, since she hasn't been there before.

She was right to defend her space and prevent it.

Your suggestions made me laugh as it was clear Cain who made the contact on Simpson. In fact, I just posted the following on another thread: "The way Cain came from lane 8 at the start and ran right into Simpson on the rail was bazaar. I chuckled at Simpson's response of brushing her aside with authority and a look of annoyance."

Exactly. Jenny had her position and Mary came barreling up beside her. There was some jostling however any elbowing was the fault of Mary.
Obviously there was close contact and both girls understood this and obviously are a lot classier than some posters on LR.
I didn't see it that way. Mary came in on Jenny (in fact I thought Mary expended too much energy going from the 8th lane to first so quickly and at such a sharp angle) and Jenny rightfully held her position.
I saw a clean run with both runners.
Racing baby! Just watched again how she defended her position on the final turn. She could have easily dropped to 3rd or even 4th. But no way! Jenny is the bomb!
Wasn't Eliud Kipchoge a teenager when he won the 5000m at the World Champs in Paris?

Totally agree. Clean good run by both girls.
BUT - it's still worth pointing out. Knowing how to deploy a little contact (shoulders, elbows, forearms) needs to be in the toolkit of all good mid-D racers.
Way too often I see people allow themselves to get bullied, when they could fight back.
This was a great experience for Mary - and I'm proud of how she ran. She should definitely go pro now...as much exposure as she can get to situations where she has to jostle and fight, the better.

Thats not even slightly true. Hell just yesterday an 18 year old got second in the Steeplechase. And Mo Aman is only 19 and won the 800. Though im sure you probably discount Kenyans right?
Funny, I was going to start a thread on this after I saw the video. I had just watched the ESPN 9 for 9 on Mary Decker-Slaney featuring the Zola Budd incident. My wife asked me who was wrong, and I said Mary should have protected her space. Then, lo and behold, this video where Jenny perfectly demonstrates just exactly how to do it. No malice, or dirtiness involved-- just good smart protecting yourself and your position. "Stand your ground" as applied to international track and field.
Heike Dreschler was 19 when she won the long jump at the first World Champs.
Jenny just stayed in her spot in lane 1 and Cain moved into it. Jenny is not required to cede her position. Any elbows were from Jenny's normal arm movement that Cain moved into. Nothing wrong there except that Cain needs to learn to merge better, and no doubt will with more experience.
