She has the same speed, but she does not have the same endurance. Simply not enough miles in her legs yet to make it though the rounds and perform well in the finals. Give her a few years of higher mileage.

Holy balls give the girl a break.. yeah obviously shes young but, how many of the other pros seasons were like hers? Cain has to have at least 3 times the races with her indoor season...

People were shocked/impressed by her indoor 4:28, her nat'l title win, her 4:04, 1:59, making the team, negative-splitting 4:05 in the semis...and people like the OP (actually he's probably a troll) are so DUMB that now they EXPECT her to fulfill whatever collective daydream the message boards might work up for her. She had the third slowest PB in the final, and had run her most impressive race yet in the semis. If she'd had another incredible effort she may have been up with Zoe Buckman, and people still would have bashed her. She had an astonishing, unprecedented year, of course, but she also had a really, really good Worlds.

Cain's got terrific speed, yes, but she doesn't yet have the strength and experience to go through three rounds. The fact she made it through to the finals was astounding. I figured she would've been spent for the semis.

She's only ever had to run one 1500/mile per event. She's never had to go through heats at this distance, so it is totally unrealistic to expect she'd burst out and be a medal contender.

Because it isn't such a trick to run one mile really well. The trick, what makes the world class world class, is they can repeat that performance two or three times in as many days. Even top level milers have trouble at this. Webb for all his speed at a young age, never was able to figure out how to leverage that speed through three rounds. It takes as much training and skill as it does to get good at that first mile.

Another thing to consider....

How much experience does she have running in a pack? She rarely has anyone within 10 meters of her.

Why are people attacking me? The "Michael Jordan of U.S. women's distance running" did not perform in the clutch.

How could any sensible person find ANYTHING to criticize in Mary Cain. The kid (and she is still just a kid) just finished 10th in a world championship final. SHE MADE THE FINAL!! She's 17 years old!!

Until not long ago her biggest race was the NYS cross country championship. Now she's running halfway across the world, in front of 60,000 people, after heats and semis, AND SHE'S WITHIN 2 SECONDS OF HER ALL TIME BEST TIME!! In the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!!

There is no 'WTF" about Mary Cain, only a WELL DONE!

I can't wait to see what she does next.
