I believe Salazar's runners fall into the legal but unethical category by abusing loopholes that allow asthma inhalers and thyroid medications.
I actually sent a letter to WADA last week about this because I don't like the rules as they are now. I urge all of you who feel the same way as I do to do something about it and write to WADA.
Victor,
WADA is in the business of catching cheats and adding to the banned list, not subtracting from it; that's how they justify their existence. Thyroid med has been researched and discussed for decades involving the world’s leading exercise physiologists and endocrinologists, etc. Most of these professionals are independent of track & field, not connected to coaching in any sport and don’t have a dog in the fight. To say you think AlSal is cheating is saying you disagree with the full weight and measure of WADA’s science, processes and perhaps its integrity. It is difficult to get into deep dive on Thyroid/Hormone discussion, but to keep is simple, if taking Thyroid meds was the key to success, you would see a flood of elite athletes taking it. A lot of athletes have taken Thyroid meds and received no performance benefit and/or got worst. Also, to the best of my knowledge AlSal has only had 3 athletes out of all of the athletes he has ever coached take Thyroid medicine; if that was key to his success, all of his athletes would be taking it. In terms of pushing the limits, when join any of elite pro training groups, one of the first things they do is have you get blood chemistry analysis and then put you and a regiment to correct deficiencies. If there is a Thyroid issue, you will probably end up taking something similar to the medicine Galen’s taking.
