I got very into running, especially in my senior year of high school, and now I'll be headed to college in a few weeks. I never did xc or track in high school, but I want to join my school's club cross-country team. Note, this is not the main school team, just a club team, but I do think that it is still pretty intense, with weekday practices, speed workouts, etc. I've been steadily upping my mileage through the past year, and now I'm at about 4-5 miles per day, with a long run of 7-8 miles on the weekends. The club has a website, and this is the same mileage that everyone else is supposed to be running as well.
However, I'm nervous about joining, because I'm sure that most of the other runners on the club team probably did xc and track in high school, and have much more experience than I do. I've never done formal speed workouts or races, and have no idea how they work. I'm also sort of slow. Do you think I will be shunned because of my lack of experience, or will I be okay? Should I worry about my speed, and being left behind during practice?
Should I just continue running on my own or would joining this team be a good idea?
