wow could you imagine running a 53 in a open 400. you would be a little tired. but imagine running it on your last lap of the 10000.....kenny ran that so smooth , talk about having balls. waiting for his country man with about a mile to go and giving kenya a chance to catch up and then hammering it all at the end. i don't think i could of paced kenny for his last 1200m if i was to jump in the last 1200m......that takes major ball to do what he did....
all i got to say is wow i can't run a ope 400 under a 53.
That kind of tells the story about the gap of talent between Ethiopia & the rest of the world.
Their two top guys were actually messing around in AN OLYMPIC FINAL trying to get Geb a medal. If they had wanted to they could have gone way under 27 minutes once the Kenyans were broken but they farted around trying to help Geb.
BTW, what was the weather like, nobody commented on the heat, not that it mattered to the outcome.
During the race the announcers said something about the heat and humidity not being a factor because it was run late at night. I believe they said it was under 30% humidity, so it was definately not bad conditions.

And consider how he ran the 53. He didn't seem to accelerate at all, he was just all of a sudden running that fast.

53 is impressive but considering most of the race was 'slow' , i'm not too surprised. It was a fag performance on his part to have to do that. But had to have a few exclamation points from teh crowd. Would like to see someone do the same to him in the 5k
It's always easier to run a fast 400 with a 9600 warmup. You sprinters wouldn't get injured as much if you did this.

Bekele's last 500 in that heat and those conditions is quite impressive that's for sure.
I was wondering how slow Micheal Johnson would need to run 24 laps, to run the 25th one in 53.0 seconds.
I would guess no faster than 60 minutes total for the 10k, if that.
Guys have run 53 at the finish of the 10 k before. Hell, it was done in the Euro champs thirty years ago by several, but of course, the time was about 40 seconds slower than in Friday's final. That said, it does show how psyched out many Westerener's are, even if drug use by certain people is condoned at the moment.

Ok everybody, please listen to me, he basically trains like my "best training program ever" thread, simply. Here is how he managed to run his last lap so fast: At the end of long hard aerobic runs, he simply runs to the barn all out, KK did this too. Now just get out and do the same.
that really does help, you may bot be able to run a 53 at the end of a 10k but you will notice your kick improve if you do that consistently for a few months.
when you've got PRs of 12:37 and 26:20 and your first 5k is 13:50 and your finishing time is going to be in the low 27s, Bekele is so aerobic and within himself that he can turn it on like that. Probably 800m pace for the last 470m.
