Female collegiate runner, currently running 55-70mpw. My 5k PR around 18:30 but I'm fairly certain I'm in 18min or better shape right now based off of workouts, etc. (ran a 4 mile tempo in 23:50 with a big negative split a week ago, but it was on a treadmill so I'm sure that made it significantly easier/faster). I've always been much more of an aerobic, long-distance type runner, and have never had any sort of decent top end speed at all. Lately I've become interested in starting to incorporate some "true speed" sessions into my training to try to work on this weak area. So, today I went to my old HS track and, in addition to some drills and plyos, did something I actually read in a post on another thread here, the one about 200's nearly all out with full recovery, starting with two and building up to more. I ran them in spikes and with the wind at my back and hit 32.06 and 32.91 (timed myself). Considering I was in spikes and going all-out, I had hoped for better. So, my question is, is this typical 200m speed for a long-distance type 5k runner with good endurance, or is it a limiting factor holding me back performance-wise? Would focusing on improving my fast-twitch capabilities (along with keeping my mileage high and building a big base, of course) help me improve my times for distance races?
