Would you rather have a world record in your event or a gold medal if you had to choose? Explain why..... why you think one is better than another?

either one means you're doped
Gold is forever baby. Name will be carved in stone forever. World record will be broken. Ideally, breaking the world record in the Olympic Games like Rudisha and hopefully not busted for being a drug cheat later. Great to see Adam Nelson get his props but still not fair that he didn't get his moment in the sun at The Games.
World record definitely
fastest of all time versus won a single global championship title. I'll take WR. Someone has to win the Olympic gold every four years, but the only way you get a world record is by being the fastest in history. OG Gold lasts 4 years until you are former winner, WR lasts until someone is better than you.
that said, i'd take an Olympic Gold over a WR that doesn't last very long. But at this point the world records have progressed to the point (except for perhaps the marathon) where when you set the record its gonna last for a long time. Other than the possibilities of current world record holders breaking their own records, not a single athlete running today has any shot at breaking any men's flat track world record: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500/mile, 3k, 5k, 10k. Only non-WR holder perhaps with a remote chance is maybe Blake in the 200, but very unlikely. Meanwhile we'll have an entirely new list of OG champions in 3 years.
I'd rather have the world records.
Anyone can get a gold medal these days.
Some of you dumb-asses can't see past the end of your nose and haven't won at anything to know that winning is more important than setting a record. The idiot that said you are no longer a champion in 4 years can't be any more ridiculously pathetic than that. This would be a paradox of sorts if true and there would be no sense in ever holding another footrace. Once a person has won a title(legally), it's theirs forever and can never be taken away. "Defending" is a dumb term as well because once achieved, it can't be taken away, only won again (repeat-threepeat etc...) which is rare but possible in individual sports. If a new champion is crowned in a new year against new competition, they are elevated in current stature but the old champion is still a champion, just not the current champion.
Therefore, a Gold Medal is more valuable than a World Record. Some here are confusing WR with Fastest Ever which there is no such thing and never will be.
The ultimate goal of any race is to win. The time is meaningless.

Uhh what? Never heard of a race against time?
Gold
I'd gladly trade my gold medals for a 26:16 10k WR.
why do you think each wr is dirty? There are wrs that are clean.

A World Record is much more enticing then an Olympic Gold Medal. The Olympics come only once every four years but how much times do you hear a World Record being broken these days? The confidence of running a blazing time is incredible! I would pick the World Record.
