So counting my mileage differently will help me improve?
Most of their running is tracked by time...not miles...so if they need to go for a 10 mile run they go run for 70 minutes...if they are feeling good they may cover 12 miles in those 70 minutes...if they are feeling beat up they may only cover 9 miles.
Point is they focus on time and not miles, it helps keep the focus on running by how they feel and not on "must run x.xx minutes per mile or I'll suck".
We did something similar in college, with most of our running based on time, not miles (running 40 minute tempos or long runs of 120 minutes) with only repeats being based on mileage (5 by mile at race pace).
