I assume this means 800 only. Given her 1:58 and her strength for rounds, I think she can do something special in Moscow.

I would think to be a serious medal contender in Moscow she'd have to be in low 1:57 shape?
wow - that sure improves Cain's chances of making it to Moscow.

She has the second fastest time in the world right now. Hard to argue that she wouldn't be in the mix if she keeps racing like she has been. And while Niyonsaba has a mid-1:56 out there, she is pretty inexperienced in terms of championship-level racing.
Geez, so much for that amazing 8 x 1000 workout she supposedly did...
I'm extremely surprised by this. I would think she has a better chance to make the team in the 1500.
that's a help to Rowbury too - I thought she would missthe wc meet 1500, behind cain, simpson & martinez.

US gets to send Simpson + 3 since Simpson is defending champ, but I'd say Rowbury still has work to do to get into the mix.

Martinez is practically a lock to make the team in the 800m. Fastest American this year, #2 [Montanyo] says she's slightly injured, #3 [Cain] not running the event. Also, Montanyo is likely to hammer the first 400m and act as a de facto rabbit, so the pace should be honest. Even if Montanyo holds back, Martinez can choose to go the front, push the pace and stay out of trouble.
Martinez would also be likely to make the team in the 1500m, but as we all know, crazy things can happen in championship 1500m races.

With the exception of Simpson (who has an automatic spot), they ALL have work to do to get into the mix.
I predict the team will be as follows
Simpson - automatic
Rowbury
Moser
Uceny (if she is healthy)
What have Gina Gall, Phoebe Wright, Erica Moore, Maggie Vessey, and Alice Schmidt been doing this year so far?

Even without Martinez, the 1500m looks very competitve. From T&FN -
Jenny Simpson—4:03.35 (wild card)
(A) 4:05.50
Gabriele Anderson—4:05.41
Sarah Brown—4:05.27
Mary Cain—4:04.62
Katie Mackey—4:04.60
Brenda Martinez—4:04.86
Treniere Moser—4:02.85
(B) 4:09.00
Emma Coburn—4:06.87
Kim Conley—4:07.17
Kate Grace—4:08.24
Julia Lucas—4:05.89
Shannon Rowbury—4:07.36
Renee Tomlin—4:08.09
Morgan Uceny—4:08.49
Yes, it helps Cain in the 1500, but I'm still not sure her chance in the 1500 is better than in the 800. Pencil in Brenda and Alysia in the 800, but from there who is definitely better than Cain at this distance? She probably can run the 800 close to a second faster than she did at the Pre. There are two days between the semis and the final. In the 1500 I think Moser and Mackey are better and would not rule out either Sarah Brown or Uceny. If these two get to the final I am not at all sure Cain can come back after two days from the prelim to beat them. Will Cain be better in 800 or 1500 after a day off?

All good points. Maybe Cain will end up moving down too.
Very Surprised!
I hope this is not correct because she not a lock for making the team in the 800, whereas in the 1500 she is a lock. There are only 2 spots up for grab and with a half dozen ladies capable of running 1:59, competing for those two slots in a tactical race is risky. As most of us know, the 800m by nature is a risky event, one won decision and it's all over. Whereas in 1500m, there aren't 3 ladies that can beat her is a tactical race and she would have a better shot at a medal in the WC 1500, which rarely goes under 4 minutes.
I agree.....people forget the fastest don't always do well in championships because of rounds to get to final.

Cain is actually entered in the 800, 1500, AND 5000. They might be waiting to see who shows up for what. Salazar appears to be up to his usual tricks. With Uceny not even there perhaps, Rowbury not where she has been, you would think Mary's going to do the 1500, but who knows?

Rowbury is coming into great form heading into Nationals. People always underestimate her based on her early season marks but she always comes through at nationals.
This year will be no different. Trust me!
She might have a chance to sneak in ONLY because Jenny has a free pass and Brenda may be doing the 800. And people are forgetting about Mackey, who barely beat Cain at Occidental (but probably wouldn't do it now). Also don't forget about Sarah Brown and Gabrielle Anderson, both of whom have faster times than Rowbury, and Rowbury has to finish in front of at least one of them.
