Heading into the 4X400 Dwight Stones on the ESPNU broadcast said that A&M was 9 points ahead of Arkanasas.
Then he thought A&M dropped the baton and was out of the race and he said, "If Arkansas wins the race they will win the NCAA title."
Then he realized A&M had not dropped out they had picked up the baton and would get 1 point for finishing last.
He then said, "Arkansas needs to win to tie A&M".
(All of this would be correct if his information was correct).
Meanwhile Florida and Arkansas were battling up front. Florida pulled away for the win and that was that. Texas A&M National Champions.
Except there is one problem with all this. FLORIDA not Arkansas was 9 points behind A&M heading into the 4X400.
So they were the ones who had to win to tie A&M and that's exactly what happened.
Unbelievable. How do you screw up the two teams? Don't that have statisticians helping out?
Did anyone hear them make a correction? I just saw the scores go up on the screen and was like WTF. Went online and in 30 seconds figured out what was going on.
WTF: Did Dwight Stones Just Screw Up the NCAA Team Title on ESPNU?

He didn't say that. Get your hearing checked.
-
Dwight Stones did say that. I am usually a Dwight Stones fan but they really screwed this Men's team title up big time.
-
Yes, Dwight Stones did say that! He totally screwed up the broadcast. Imagine this happening in a "real" sport that the networks cover. Never...
-
Glad to see I wasn't hearing things.
Think about how improbable it was for Florida and A&M to tie. A&M has to get last and Florida has to win. This if for the NCAA title.
And all of America doesn't know about it. -
As I said on another thread, this is two years in a row. Last year Tony McQuay anchored the Gators winning 4x4 and all Louis Johnson did was congratulate the 4x4 guys for winning thevrelay. He had no clue they had won the NCAA Championships. Just like this year. And both years they never talked about the Gators having a shot. A&M, Arkansas and Oregon all were mentioned often but not Florida. Are they all STUPID? Florida had lots of potential points on the last day with both relays and Craddock in the TJ and Lovett in the HH. Don't their stat guys have a clue either?

But look on the bright side: almost all of America doesn't care either. -

So that's an excuse for the Mouth that Bores and Rawson to mail it in? These guys screwed it up all day long, making error after error. -

Please list three other than the one in this thread title. Thanks! -
Stone messed up. Confused me when he said Arkansas need to win then I see Florida tie. dud

I don't understand this message board. There are 48 comments about the spelling of Dwayne Wade's name and just a few, mostly by me, on the awful TV reporting on the NCAA Track Championship (trying to get some attention on this MONUMENTAL SCREW-UP). Dwight Stones, Larry Rawson, Louis Johnson and their whole support staff messed up hugely for the second straight year. Wouldn't you think that after screwing up on Florida last year they might want to avoid doing so again? How could they all be unaware of all the potential points the Gators had today with both relays and Craddock and Lovett - all favorites for at least the top three in their events? Truly bush league.

1. Stones said Friday and Kesselring both scored in the 1500. They were dead last and second to last. He didn't see Kesselring fall right in front of him and failed to notice Friday running last for most of the race.
2. Neither realized that it clinched the title for Kansas. They said that Daniels needed to score big points in the 200.
3. They didn't say squat about Oregon's 4x100 damn near running out of the zone in the final exchange. They said there was a bad exchange but didn't say anything about the possibility of a DQ. -

That's not an error, you dolt. -

Oh, the irony! -
3. Rawson said Coburn chose Oregon for college. There you go, jackass.

And he almost said she went to Eugene but caught himself, couldn't come up with Boulder and went into her training at altitude.
Nothing like live TV! -
4. Pretty sure I heard Rawson say in the opening lap of the mens 5000 that Lalang trained at altitude in Flagstaff. There was a pause of silence, and then Stones stated it correctly that Estrada ran at altitude at NAU in Flagstaff and Lalang was at U of A. (Or something like that.)

List three? For two hours they never mentioned Florida in the team race. So each time they discussed the team race and didn't mention Florida is an error. So countless errors besides the ones others have pointed out.
Here is a contrast. In the '76 Olympics Hasely Crawford, in lane 1 - thus NOT a favorite - won the race. The announcer for ABC was Keith Jackson, the long-time college football guy. Not a supposed Track expert like Stones, Rawson and Johnson. Keith Jackson called it perfectly. A ten second race won by a long shot and he nailed the call. Knew who he was. A professional who had done his homework. These guys had two hours,, not ten seconds, and they had no clue. -
Yes, heard the same errors. And at one point one of the announcers said Arkansas instead of Arizona when talking about Lalang. Also, said Gardner was running the "longest" leg of the relay--the straightaway. Hmmm...

Nice try...I'm not gonna let a troll force me to sit through 2 hours of pablum again just to win an Internet pissing match. Just for kicks though, how bout the fact that Stones originally called both Oregon 1500 winners as having scored as Rawson mumbled unintelligibly?
No self respecting football fan would suffer through such unprofessional crap without calling it as it is, and I won't do any differently here. And spare me the "you couldn't do better" angle...I've recently seen many a decent young reporter who is professional try much harder than those two jokers who mailed it in today.
The bottom line is that anyone who is OK with the way American Track and Field is produced on TV is an idiot or a hater. Stones himself in his younger days railed on about how things weren't done right, but his ethics changed when it came time to leave the spotlight and get a real job. Now he takes his orders from an anonymous producer and asks "how high" when bad TV says "jump!"
There's irony for you.
