I am sure that when her career is over and a reporter asks her what the race of her life is, Simpson will respond, "That diamond league race in 2013 where I finished third and was more than two seconds off the leader and my PR."

She also ran 3:59 as a college senior kicking down some of the best in the world. That has to rank higher than a 4:02 DL third place.
Thank you.
I scratched my head when I read that on the front page too.
3:59 she actually won....but let it go
I think the headline could be a bit more nuanced as when I first read it I was a bit confused. Then I read the article:
"When Simpson won her world title in 2011, she ran 4:05.49 and closed in 47 and was world champion. Tonight, she closes in 45.20 in a 4:02 race and got crushed."
The point being if you take out the names of the races and the place this may have been the best race of Simpson's life from a physiological standpoint. So from a physiological standpoint this arguably is the best she's ever run.
I've added an asterisk to the headline and am linking to this thread.
Maybe so, but it's rare to see an American female runner so bold as to grab the lead so early in an elite 1500 (recently its only been Uceny in Diamond League). When she won the World gold she was as surprised as anyone else. This was coldly premeditated.
What , your retort back is maybe the worst statement ever written about an athletes performance. Its non sensical.
Take your bruises , admit you blew it and move on.
The copy line could have read " Simpson shows great early season form finishing 3rd against a world class field "

Physiologically, and in pretty much every other way, the 3:59 is better.
I can see Wejo's argument. That her 4:02 (running in the race the whole way) with a 45.2 last 300 probably wins more often at that level than a 4:05 with a 47.
But I still would rank her WC gold better as would I rank the 3:59 above it.
There is no way that you can begin to even compare these two races. The final of the 1500m at the World Championship needs to be placed into proper context; that is to say, Simpson had to run in the heats and semi-final before she ran 4:05.49 to win.

Agreed. I get the point of the headline, but simply looking at splits ignores the tactics going on in the race. Taking it to an extreme, it's like saying Webb's 3:46 was better than Kiprop's Olympic gold.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
