This summer I ran about 70 miles a week and rode only once per week (about 22 miles)and swam roughly 3000 meters a week in preparation for a late July tri consisting of a .5 mile swim, 17.5 mile bike and a 4 mile run. wound up in 5th. The swim sucked, made up a ton of time on the bike and ran the 4 in sub 20 min.
No. If you're doing the same training a runner would, _and_ lumping in bike and swim workouts in there, you'll overtrain yourself in about a week. You need to balance them out, particularly since both running and biking benefit from the "long run" idea.
You might check out the workout schedules (as a basis; i'm not actually a fan of their exact schedules) and the message boards at
or read some of the messages in rec.sport.triathlon. The workouts are a little harder to schedule because you're still trying to periodize your training (hard/easy, etc.), _and_ work in some long runs and faster runs, and long bikes and faster bikes... if you're not a great swimmer, you'll probably make most improvement in swimming by focusing on improving your technique, which saves you some workout intensity for run & bike.
Most triathletes spend more total time on the bike than running. A 3 hour ride is a lot less punishing than a 3 hour run.
