So I just had to do a pretty weird workout. 4x400 with 3 minute rest. I hit 58.8, 59.5, 59.2, 58.0.
1. What kind of mile shape do you think I'm in?
2. What does this workout do for you physically?

little more info would be great. past running history, PRs, mileage, other training, other workouts, etc
there are people who could do that workout but not break 4:40, there are some that would run 4:10s.
4 x 400 at 800 pace is a very typical workout for an 800 guy or a miler. Usually the rests are a little longer if the workout is truly at 800 pace, like 4 to 5 minutes. That you did it with 3 minute rests and ran the fastest on the last one says you are in at least sub-1:58 shape for the 800. The workout teaches your body to run at 800 pace under increasing levels of fatigue. You bet that shizzle is freakin' hard!
I know you asked about what kind of mile shape you are in. What are your personal bests in various events and what kind of other training have you been doing?
4:12 mile
PB's are 2:00 and 4:26

Probably notices you lack speed compared to most your age so he gave you an 800 speed workout.
I'm guessing that workout indicates you are in 4:21 shape for the mile.
