It might actually be smart for Gatlin to run this race and lose to Bolt, even if he tries his best and it is an honest loss.

It will make him more hungry and Bolt maybe over-confident such that he won't get good enough to beat Gay.

Gatlin is likely to improve by world's, assuming he's going to make the team.

I was thinking that he should bail from this race, because I don't think he's in any kind of shape to beat a healthy Bolt, but it will be great if he lines up and runs. There's money to be made, the cost of failure is negligible, and there is always the possibility that he will win.

Collins and Vicaut are the real heroes of this race, though.

His 9.88 (+2.6) in Eugene adjusts to a 10-flat.

Do you really think that could be enough to beat Bolt in Rome? If he can replicate his 9.91 from Beijing, that just might be enough if Bolt gets caught napping--but I would be surprised to see him do it.

I'm getting nervous with your post that Gatlin might actually win in Rome. If this race is important to Bolt, he will win. He is the ultimate championship performer.

There is no 200m listed, and CL is not currently on the 100m startlist.

It's full of homeboys, who should be fun to watch, given their good indoor results.

I would have loved to see CL in this race, but he never seems to be entered in the same races in which Vicaut is entered.

I'll say it again: Vicaut needs to switch to the 200/400, and really think about what MJ did. Not only does he have MJ's basic form, he's pretty much exactly the same size as MJ--he is listed at 1cm shorter, and 1 kg lighter, which old listings are bogus as judged by his physique. I'm sure he's exactly the same as MJ was at his peak.

Unlike MJ, however, I think that Vicaut is clean. While MJ was able to hold his form for even 400m, I don't know that it would be possible to do it with any speed for that long, if clean. Being clean, Vicaut might totally suck at the 400, and be only mediocre at the 200--but I would like to see him try, anyway.

I would desperately like to see an in-form CL compete this year. His best times have always been very-low 10.0x adjusted, which would be very competitive so far this year.

If Bolt doped he's done it only 2-3 times (08,09,12) every other year he's been a pro he's beatable and human.

Bolt doesn't need juice right now unless he is treating some sort of injury.

Clean, I think he's about as fast as anybody out there as long as he is in reasonable shape, except for maybe Gay.

Even though he will never, ever be caught unless something catastrophic happens in the relationships at the top of track, I would have to say that I wouldn't.

I would save it for big occasions, like the previous poster said. Like any drug, probably the more you do it the less effect it has, so why use it when you don't have to?

Also like the previous poster says, we have seen him lose (e.g. to Powell), and suck (e.g. in Ostrava IIRC) in the 100m before this season. Even if he were to lose to Gatlin, his star would not dim in the slightest.

Even if he gains that .5 advantage that is so popular among sprinters, that still puts him at 10.08, and any residual or lingering effect, or error in the .5 benefit, and he's below 10, which is as good as anybody but Gay.

I personally think he's one of the best of all-time, clean, and that he is low-9.8x or mid-high 9.7x clean.

If Gatlin beats him, all that will show is that Bolt is either:

1) injured

2) out of shape

3) tired

4) ambivalent or psychologically uninvolved

I will never forget seeing Bolt JOG to sub-10 clockings, while everyone is pushing as hard as they can to pick up the scraps of 2nd and 3rd.

Apparently Lemaitre ran a 20.17 (+1.5) on Tuesday. Second was Calesio Newman in 20.68 so even if the time isn't mind blowing he won by a good margin.

I would say Bolt is a 10.0/19.7 guy naturally but a great responder to Peds and his height gives him the advantage when on them. I remember before anyone barely knew about Bolt I was training with some of his training partners. We all laughed at how funny is was that Bolt could run a 10.3 100m dash in practice this was in 2006. He had not even been lifting weights. Then bam 100m world record holder a few years later, just mind blowing.
