So I was messing around with the buttons on the treadmill at the gym so see what metrics it churns out for different paces and inclines. When I put it on 7:41 mins/miles with a "Level: 12" incline, which is almost as steep as it goes, it said the power output was 357 watts, the same as if I put it on a 4:57 pace with zero incline. Indeed, running on a 7:41 mins/mile pace at a level-12 incline feels about the same effort as a 5-minute pace to me. But doing the slow pace, high incline feels like a lot less stress on my legs, a lot less pounding, almost like I'm gliding across the surface and pushing off perfectly with my calves. I'm wondering if therefore by doing workouts on a treadmill with a steep incline I can get the same benefits of running at a 5-minute pace with good form.
