Total Violation, But i'm sure she will be at Oregon soon or later. She gets the same pitch everyday from Oregon ALUM and Major Booster Alberto Salazar. So everyone is cheating, some are just way more savvy with it, and others are just plain getting away with murder.
Possible NCAA violation - Oregon coach Maurica Powell had 'prolonged' talk with Cain after Pre

maybe not, the meet was on their campus and the competition was over, so it could just be seen as an unofficial visit.

At the Virginia state meet on the same day, lots of us witnessed numerous college coaches going out of their way to follow the rules. Refusing to even say hello to juniors, even when involved in conversations with others standing with them. In some cases, actually walking away when underclassmen attempted to talk to them. I stood next to one group in which a college head coach wouldn't even explain to a junior why he wasn't responding to her. He waited for one of her friends to tell her he wasn't allowed to talk to her.
A lot of coaches are following the rules very carefully. And not making any "news" doing so.
So the real question is: Is there a different set of rules for some of the big names? -
Depends what is important to Mary as to whether she goes to Oregon or not. If track is the most important, she will probably go there. If a quality education is important, she'll go elsewhere. Hasay made that choice as well. I'm not saying that it isn't possible to get a good education at the "O". But it certainly doesn't hold a candle to other schools such as Stanford. Mary can punch her own ticket. Think carefully.

"If the above is a violation, someone report them to the NCAA."
Seriously? -
Honestly I think Stanford is her best college choice for many reasons. AINEC

I'm pretty sure the rule is: If Mary went up to the coach and introduced herself, then no violation. If the Oregon coach approached Mary, then it's a violation.
But...it's been a while since I was a HS junior. -
If she approached them all they can do is say hello and then lat her kow they can not speak to her until July 1st or that they will be in touch at a later date. It should be a one inute conversation. They may also says congrats on a great race, but short and to the point, again a 1minute conversation.
-
It's 100 percent ok. Cain was on Oregons campus. Powell did nothin wrong. You are well within the Rules to talk to a junior that Is on your campus. Ironically no other colleges could talk to her at pre but any Oregon coaches were within the rules.

If this was true, every school that ever hosted a summer camp would be in violation of the rules. -
Maurica Powell is not stupid.
-
Salazar talks too much and Schumacher doesn't talk enough. We need a happy medium.

How on earth did Walter Houser Brattain get that Nobel prize of his with that subpar U of O education? -
"During a quiet period, they may make in-person recruiting contacts only on the college campus. Off-campus, recruiters are limited to phone calls and letter-writing."

Not a fan of the NCAA and it rules.
Also not a fan of people frothing to report what may be a violation even if they are not sure if it's a violation.
What if Mary Cain never runs for the NCAA?
I hope she doesn't. -
total violation. Oregon needs to be penalized big time.
-
Rupp ran at Oregon after being a professional and didn't get in trouble so this case won't be any different. Nike and Oregon will find a way around it.
-
Is it a violation to make millions of dollars off of college athletes whilst at the same time refusing to allow them to earn a penny?
Someone should report the NCAA. -
The NCAA rules are ridiculous, contrary to every generous and natural human impulse. They are like corporate "fair disclosure" rules or college gender sensitivity codes or CO2 suppression regs or campaign finance pettifoggery or rules against teaching without an education degree. They flout any rule of sensible law.
"Getting away with murder" is not quite the analogy. Try getting away with sociability or common sense. -
If Alabama football can offer a scholarship to a 15 year old, than Oregon can talk to a 17 year old... I think the rules have changed and the NCAA has no more power. or so it seems.
