Congratz to Chris Derrick at Pre!
He was closing in on the #2 American... Quite a feat!!
Nice PR. Don't stop now!

Derrick's time replaced Alan Webb's as the best-ever by a 22-year-old American.
Chris Derrick - 13:09.04
Alan Webb - 13:10.86
Chris Solinsky - 13:12.24
Bob Kennedy - 13:14.91
Bill McChesney - 13:15.77
Ryan Hall - 13:16.03
Galen Rupp - 13:18.12 (indoor)
Dathan Ritzenhein - 13:22.23
Steve Prefontaine - 13:22.4
Alberto Salazar - 13:23.62
Your list, to make more sense, really should include everyone age 22 or younger. For example, Rudy Chapa ran 13:19.22 in 1979 at age 21, putting him ahead of Ritz on your list.

Better double-check the results, dude. Derrick WAS the #2 American in this race, right behind Rupp.

Partial Results:
5 Lagat , Bernard USA 13:07.76
6 Rupp , Galen USA 13:08.69
7 Derrick , Chris USA 13:09.04 PB
I think you should read the results.
I count 2 USA's...
"Tea Party Agrees" obviously discredits Lagat as being an American.
I feel as though many US born runners secretly feel this way (to some degree). In his post race interview he was asked about how the bar has been raised and discussed how he thought he inspired people to cause it. What I think he knows and everyone else knows is that US born runners are inspired to ERASE his records, and are in no way inspired by his performances.

I'm an American and Lagat is one of my favorite runners. I'm sure he absolutely inspires other American runners to better times and to be able to compete on the international stage, especially a few years ago when he was faster and was winning medals.
Of course they are inspired to break his records, too. That's part of running. They are inspired to break Alan Webb's mile record too I'm sure. Derrick probably wants the 10k record someday.
Lagat came to the United States in college and used a combination of crazy talent and years of hard work to succeed in this country. It doesn't get more American than that, as far as I'm concerned.
I think you'll find that Lagat is one of the most like and respected American runners out there.
Letsrun posters? Exactly the opposite.
Lagat came to the USA as, I believe, a 22-year-old 3:37 guy from Kenya. Everything he has achieved has come from training in the USA, coached by a naturalized American Citizen from the Peoples Republic of China. He has an American wife and American Kids.
That's about as American as it gets.

Except that when Lagat became an American citizen he LIED about it and ran for Kenya in the 2004 Olympics.
"It doesn't get more American than that"? ---- Fuk-off Bernie.

Wrong. His wife is Canadian, of Chinese descent.

Yeah, she is Canadian, but his kids are probably American citizens or duel-citizenship with Canada. His wife might even be an American citizen by now. And what does Chinese descent have to do with anything?
But seriously...Canada and the US are extremely similar.

This ^
Except you forgot to note that Kentucky and the US are also extremely similar.
improving about the same rate as Galen...if not better or faster?.....hope the development continues!

That would be a different list. This is a list of 22-year-olds.
I agree, and not only that, he has lived more of his life here in the USA than he did in Kenya, at this point.
He's a natural American, open, friendly personality, great guy.
He's also been consistently and incredibly encouraging to all up and coming USA runners.
The problem with the negative people here...is racism.
There should be more criticism of foreigners who come here to use the USA and give nothing back. I'll bet you dollars to donuts Nick Willis continues to live in the USA after his career.
He came to the USA, took a scholarship from American kids, married an American woman, lives here, and competes for NZ.
Arguably 90% of his opportunity and success was a gift of the USA. Yet he gives nothing back. It is all about him representing NZ, increasing his fame in NZ, and doing nothing here.
Lagat, also a 1500m runner could have done that, and never given back to the system and country that gave him a scholarship and so much opportunity.
And don't drag out the Lagat ran for Kenya trope, the problem is the IOC, not the athlete.
Lagat made moves to become a US citizen (as did his wife) and give back to this country.
Willis (or any other athlete doing similar) has not. (I got nothing against Willis, he's just an easy example, fill in the blanks with your own example -- remember how many Olympians from other countries were announced last year with their NCAA background?
Most of these guys and gals are not even smart enough to ever thank their NCAA schools or the USA in their interviews.
And, as many people have said, their is no possible reciprocity -- there is no country where USA athletes can get scholarships and support.
Every 4 years joe sixpack watching NBC expects the USA to dominate at track and field -- and never does joe sixpack think about how he can support the sport.
The NCAA is the defacto training ground for the majority of Olympians in track and field. Kirani James, anyone?
Just a few times I'd like to see these guys and gals give a real shout out of thanks to the USA and their Universities for making it all possible for them.
Lagat has done all that, and repped his new country well.
If you want to be pissed off about immigration, ask yourself who passed the laws to let in the Ukrainian mafia, or the Chechens etc.
A Duck, interesting you didn't choose a Nike Athlete as your example.

Are we? Are we really? I don't know many Canadians, if any, who would agree. Canadians have a much different culture in many respects. Our world view by default is completely different. Maybe it seems similar to you, but any time I've visited your country, I can't help but notice how different it really is. You guys are like an awesome house party. Everyone wants to go because they'll have a great time, meet all the coolest people, or be the coolest person. The problem is that it's cool only a few times and eventually it's not worth the mess or the house falling down with you inside it, because the host spent all the money on cheap booze and forgot about the cracks in the foundation and the leaking roof. Eventually it gets annoying because the guy hosting the party week after week keeps twisting your arm forcing you to go, but you don't want to because you know there are more important things in life.
America is a great country, but the hypocrisy, greed, corruption and selfishness seem to give all the good things a real run for their money. In regards to Lagat... what's the problem? You have seem to hate anyone that isn't a true American. What does that even look like? How many medals has he won for the red white and blue now? 7? Only 3 as a Kenyan by my count. Need I remind you that unless you're Native American, you're not that much different from Lagat himself. His wife is of Chinese descent. Tell me, where did your grandparents come from? What race to you declare yourself as? If you aren't Native, you're an immigrant too.
Wait....so Americans are twisting Canadians' arms, forcing them to stay in the US?
