haile is 7 seconds back of the fastest marathoner in the world who is also a guy that runs sub 59 half.

that means all the records can go.

everything from 1km to marathon.

he might as well do it. the lower distances records would be lovely speed work for a sub 27 10k.

I think it is notable how some say he is even older. Whether it not this true, big well done. Go geb and I and many fans look forward to seeing him break many more world records in the masters after his multitude in the normal

Will they amend the age grade tables and will that mean there will be lots of old men crying because they just lost 2% off their times.

Will he grace the World Masters in Brazil with his presence? If so, a lot of people will want to buy him a drink....

That is honestly incredible for him to be that close to Kipsang. GOAT.

I think Haile's longevity may be an indication that he is not on EPO. If his 10K/5K world records were set while he was using PEDs during the "EPO era" then he would still need to be juicing to run these amazing times so many years later. It is possible that he is still using, but it would seem like a ridiculous risk for him to take now that testing is better. Also, he has much less to gain from cheating now that he is not really a world beater anymore. It seem that now his main motivation to run competitively is only his personal enjoyment. This just doesn't feel like a cheater to me.

Also, his longevity is an indication that when he first came on the scene, he really was as young as he was reported to be. The guy is amazing.

it blows me away that at his age, haile would still beat me any day of the week in a race. i can go sub 19 for 5k, and that's probably nothing for him.

Well this message board took a turn toward the boring. I had hoped someone would respond to the idea that if HG was doping back then, he would have to also be doping now. My evidence for this is that in 1998 he ran 26:22 for 10K at the age of 25. In 2012, he ran 27:20 at the age of 39. Slowing down by one minute over 14 years seem like a normal digression from one's peak ability to middle age. It's actually less than a normal digression! If he was on EPO back then, he would surely having to be using now in order to digress so little. So the question is, would he use EPO now that he has nothing to gain? He's already rich and famous and has nothing to prove. Why continue to cheat at competition and risk getting caught and ruining your legacy? Haile is either incredibly stupid, or he is and always has been clean. In his non-running life Haile has accomplished a great deal that would require someone to not be stupid. So I am leaning toward the latter option that he is in fact clean. I know I could be wrong. He could be driven by a huge ego to continue to cheat if he has always been a cheater. But if I was forced to choose, I would say he is clean.

it's more that the guys "tightened up" the laps in the distance races from '90s onwards

the likes of viren/pre/puttemans/maybe quax, dixon shouda gone 13'00 - 13'10 in '70s ( maybe more like 13'05 - 13'10 ) but they had such poor pre-conceived ideas of what pace to aim for

these guys were animals & shouda had no problem running 5k ( mabe 10k ) to their potential

pre ran a ?solo 27'43 on a windy day in eugene in '74 - probably worth well below 27'40 on windless & maybe below 27'30 with pacing to 1/2 way

he had 3'54 speed from year before - maybe lot better if he'd run it few times ideally ( but then again '74 maya been shift to endurance )

worth noting though, puttemans 8'13.2i wr in '73 maya been an intrinsic ~ 7'30/7'31 outdoor effort !!!

ovett only ran 8'13.51wr outdoors to beat rono in '78 ))

a lot of wrs in '80s, then especially '90s on were due to realising that each lap has to be run brutally hard

He was 4th or 5th on the all-time list for his 5K he went through in the 10K.

Has anyone seen any extensive interviews with Haile in the last year or so? I'd like to hear his plans and goals.

I'm glad to see Haile still competing and that his mindset has changed somewhat.

He was always focused on running WRs (frequent statements about how many WRs he'd set) and it seemed that in his late 30s he was getting a bit dispirited as not only was he no longer setting WRs but he was also getting beat even when running quite well.

Now he's refocused on the Masters records and he seems more focused again.

Having seen pictures of him in '91/'92 at the junior champs you'd have sworn he was much older than stated but having now carried on for so long either he was the right age or he's running with the best in the world in his mid 40s!

It was 40+. The WMA (World Masters) got the IAAF to change it to 35+

sounds reasonable. gebreselassie seems like a nice guy without the cutthroat vanity of lance armstrong.
