At the eve of the drug Olympics (I thought 1968 was the drug Olympics - 36 years ago...), I think this is a fitting question.
If you were/are a say 14min low or 13min high 5K runner or +/-4 minute miler, what was the reason that motivated you not to take perf enhancing drugs.
On my part, for some reason, it was never a consideration. But in retrospect, I'm not too sure why. The only reason that I can think of is that it was illegal and that none of my teamates were taking any. But that's a pretty lame excuse if you ask me.
As Charlie Francis said - its a level playing field out there, just not the playing field that the public thought it was.
I'm interested in knowing the reasons that motivated athletes on the brink of international level to train like animals, be injured most of the time and compete at sub optimal levels. In my case I don't think I was competing against too many people that took perf enhancing drugs. But the higher level athletes certainly were and are. But in my case, perhaps it would have been fun to run a sub 4 minute mile. Why was I trying to eat well, why did I take anti-inflamatories when I had tendinitis, why did I go do runs at 11pm after a long studying session, why did I push myself so hard in trainings, sometimes to stupid limits...and totally disregarded other methods... Really, it still comes down to - well it was illegal...
What is your reason (that is if you were running at a decent level)
