Why does everybody give Schumacher a pass. His guys never race, he never shares any information about training philosophies, and has access to every person thinking about signing with Nike and they're the only company sponsoring more than a couple athletes.
Frank Shorter, never coached a group of athletes to this success. Billy Rodgers never coached a group of athletes to this success. Bob Kennedy never coached a group of athletes to this success.
Steve Scott never coached a group of athletes to this success. Jim Ryun never coached a group of athletes to this success.
I could go on, tons of former USA running greats haven't done crap for the sport, really, over the years.
It's been a long journey, but Alberto finally is getting results.
And, Nike, a company born of running, spends a fortune sponsoring runners...when they could make just about as much money not sponsoring them.
With out Nike making running Pro, so many runners would have short or no careers. Nike forced the other shoe companies to help make the sport pro...it wasn't going to happen any other way.
Running is lucky that it gave birth to a coach and an athlete who went on to form a company that was successful and could help running grow. No, not all the attempts were successful...it has been a long evolution, now some results are being seen.
Alberto Salazar is GREAT for USA running. It is a safe bet bet that a huge amount of money would not be spent on USA runners if not for Alberto putting his efforts together.
Phil Knight once told Alberto that if you are going to be successful, you are going to get a lot of criticism...jealous and attacks come with the territory.
