Hi, I just finished my eligibility at a D1 school and want to pursue a coaching career. I honestly have zero idea how to approach this. Do you need to pass certain tests or anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I couldnt picture myself doing anything else.
What level do you want to coach?
College runners finishing school and wanting to coach are a dime a dozen. You need to do something to distinguish yourself. The most common route is going to grad school and being a graduate assistant for a couple years. The higher the profile school the better, but the most important thing is getting any experience on your resume even if it's just volunteering.

It's true. If you just finished running at a division 1 program, and you honestly don't know how to get into coaching then don't even bother. You probably should of figured it out by now.
Well to be honest I didnt have the time to try and reach out. I was running at a high level and put everything into my running. So to try and make connections and start my coaching journey did not even cross my mind while running.
Don't be too hard on the kid for his inability. he only wants to be a coach after all.

You couldn't reach out to running coaches because you cared about running too much? Oh boy.
become a teacher and offer to coach the team at your school or assistant coach. Once you have some experience there and are producing results, see if you can get a job as an assistant coach at the college level and after some time there move to a head coaching position. There are other routes.
Have connections
Get on in any volunteering capacity you possibly can with the biggest program you possibly can. Big programs have big reach and connections into the coaching community and have automatic name prestige, even if you never coached a day. Work tirelessly, learn from everyone, expect nothing in return. Keep going this way and the coaches at your program will help you find a spot to start at.
