I was looking at the Flotrack app, which looks pretty nice, but for $2.99 I'm not sure if I want to try it out. Is there anything else out there with similar functionality for free? Anybody using the Flotrack app with success?

can't see a price on there, I assume it's free?
You do realize there is a stopwatch with splits already on the Iphone under Clock? :)
^this
Nice suggestion. I've looked at that one. One of the main features that attracts me to the Flotrack app is the ability to time and take splits for multiple athletes in one race. For example, having 8 guys in the 1600m at a Wednesday dual meet.
I am aware of the Apple stopwatch function, but it doesn't tell you cumulative time; just each lap. It also doesn't have the ability to time multiple athletes. I realize you can time a ton of athletes with one stopwatch, but then you're left doing a bunch of arithmetic after the meet. Once or twice is fine, but with dozens of athletes competing a handful of times per season, this can add up. I'd rather have the app just read everything out to me.
Makes sense... for only one individual it works fine.
This actually looks awesome, but for $4.99 I'm not 100% sure. Looks like it hasn't been updated in forever. Should be pretty simple to make, so I'm guessing there's something similar for free. Any reviews or suggestions?

Are you stupid, or just lazy?
As stated in my last post, just lazy.
bump for curiousity
I wanted to bump this thread as I just got my first ever smartphone, and want to find an app to use to track splits for some upcoming meets.
Ideally, it would be something where you could enter your athletes names in it, the event, and then just hit a button every time you want a split.
I'd be happy to shell out a few clams for a good app.
Anyone heard of one called Split Tracker?

I think you just need a good watch.
I find it tough to take splits tapping the phone and often mess up just taking splits with my phone watching a video.
Much tougher with multiple splits and multiple athletes.
You need a watch with a button you can feel.
^^ THIS ^^
I like the Flotrack app w/ the predicted finish time, live tweets of the splits, and the ability to store the whole race and email it to yourself.
The down side is absolutely not being able to feel the buttons. You want to see your runner cross the line and touch it at the same time, but often any slight movement puts you a bit off when touching the pad, therefore you might miss the split button and they become inaccurate.
Looks like they borrowed the idea from this guy.
Check out this stopwatch app just released for iPhone. It is full specific for track and includes individual and relay events; a very good feature is that the split/lap functions can be controlled with the external volume buttons of the iPhone, so you can keep your eyes on the track. Or
just bought it mate, i will give it a go and let you know what i think, may be a while till i get to actually use it on the track but the use of the volume controller is a definite step up from trying to hit the damn button, i always miss it when i get excited during races :(
The ones I use are "stopwatch" and "stopwatch+"
Agreed, controlling the app with the volume buttons was one of my main requirements for this app.
hereforalaugh, let me know your comments and findings, I am pretty sure we can improve it. If somebody else is interested, please find more details here:
hi,
i have tried it a bit now and still like it but one important request,
can you please make an update where the 3/5000m splits go 400s from the first split, so 12x400 + 1x200 instead of 1x200 + 12x400 for the 5000.
we're usually based at the starting line
