Rorey Fraser ran 4:03.99 tonight at St Vrain Invite in Longmont, CO. This is a high school meet, but it offers a few elite events including this one. The old record was set by Ted Castanada in 1979 at 4:04.36. Castanada ran for CU and has been coaching at Colorado College for decades.

Even with the altitude issue it seems like the state record should be faster . But then figuring in a 5% adjustment and that 4:03 is a 3:50 and that becomes a different story.

Cole Park miles are not full miles. Porter was a beast when it came to training, but his 4:00 "mile" was not a full mile.
Jorge Torres ran 3:58 at Fairview High School on a Saturday morning getting ready for Beijing (when he ran the 10,000).

1600 or mile? Nonetheless Torres probably here put down the fastest mile on Colorado soil in this workout.
Porter claimed he ran 3:59 in Alamosa in a workout. Maybe on a downhill road course. I doubt he ever ran faster than 3:44 for a 1500 on the track.
Colorado State had a top collegiagte miler about 15 years ago. I'm surprised he never ran faster than 4:03 in a mile during that time there. Brian Berryhill.
Have to also consider how seldom the mile is run in competition.

Hey genious, we're talking about the COLRADO S-O-I-L RECORD...
He was responding to my reply. He was a fast Colorado miler and I wondered why he never did a sub 4 in Colorado but like someone mentioned the mile is rarely run.
Colorado is where great runners train but race elsewhere.
Even more so than Wisconsin which only about 6 years ago had a sub 4 mile race with Tegenkamp and Solinsky around 3:55. The indoor track record is still 4:00 by Steve Lacy which on that track is probably worth 3:56 on a banked turn indoor track the collegiates race on these days.

When Big 12s were hosted at CU back in 2008 both Pifer and Manzano went 3:41 if I remember correctly. Worth about a 3:58-3:59
torres ran a 359 1600m at fairview. using the 1.08 conversion, manzano\'s 341.8 from big 12\'s in 2008 is a 359.5 full mile. still gotta give some credit to rory fraser for actually running the fastest mile on colorado soil. he was down by 10m with 150m to go and rallied down the stretch for the win, great to watch.

Good questions.
Berryhill ran 3:45 1500 m in Fort Collins at the Mountain West Conference meet, 1999 or 2000. Can't remember if he ever went under 3:55, but it was either 3:54 or 3:55 overseas somewhere. 3:35 in the 1500, also in Europe.

The previous record holder's name is Ted Casteneda ... two E's and two A's ... not four A's.
He placed top-4 at Nationals in the 5k in '74, '75 and '76.
He also held the CU 10,000m record until Dathan Ritzenhein broke it in 2004.
