I was looking at the shorts section on running warehouse and was somewhat shocked to see that the average price of shorts is like $40 now. I felt like $30 was high end stuff just recently. That doesn't even make sense to me.
On that same note, anybody know of any places to get nice cheap shorts?
I get mine at Ross. You have to check about once a week for a month or two but, then I found 3 pairs of really nice black Puma splits for 20 clams a shell. They would have been $40 each, otherwise.
seriously? you may as well start asking "when did movies go over $4?" Please. the gas you buy is quadrupled in the last 15 years. a nice pair of shorts with heat sealed seams that a runner can use for, i don't know, about 7 years or so, will run $40 to $50 dollars. Pro rate that and stop whining. No wonder runners get such a bad rap. we are such cheap MFers.

try race expos but get there on the early days. Also, try target. I have some target running shorts that I still use that are a few years old and I think I bought them for 13-15$.

Go to the Team section on runningwarehouse and find the Nike split shorts. They're $24 but with a 15% discount code you can save ~$3 and they have a key pocket. Two months ago they were discounted to $15 so I'm stocked up for a while.
Part of the issue is also manufacturer marketing. "This years" gear cost top dollar, last years? same as we're used to paying. Same goes with shoes. Why buy "the latest upgrade" to your Mizuno Waverider XVI, when last year's model is 35% cheaper?
I remember saving up and buying a pair of Quicksilver shorts circa 1990 and they were exactly $40.

I visited a local running store recently, and was surprised to see shorts in the $45 + range. One pair was over $50. Who pays $50 for a pair of running shorts? I guess someone does, but it isn't me.

Some people wouldn't be caught dead in anything but the latest fashions while out jogging their 9 minute miles.
runningwarehouse has the 1" split BOA shorts for $22.95 and free 2 day shipping. They have a key pocket too. These are my favorite shorts to wear and a lot of solid colors to choose from.

Yeah, I just picked up a few pairs on runningwarehouse for about $17 a pair in their "liquidation apparel" section. Whenever they have shorts I like in there I stock up. My LRS had shorts for $52. I wanna support em, but that's a bit much.
the Eastbay shorts that are not splits do in fact have a key pocket but the splits do not.
You can't blame the stores for the price, you have to blame the companies. Just check back when the season changes and get stuff off of the sale rack. Or at least get your shoes there and get your shorts online.

Target has some decent running shorts. I think they're Champion brand. Not too expensive and I like them because they're a little longer. The spilt side ain't my style.
Just stack up on Nike Tempo shorts when they go on sale. I usually get them for like $15 to $17. Very comfortable. The fit is unreal. They got lots of fruitcake colors though so beware.
