They go down the list and ask "who wants to go?". When they find 3 willing to run for the short money we have a team.
Huh. I always thought we put a team of like 5 in every time.

There's a reason they teach 1st grade math.
Here are the top 8 U.S. women during that qualifying window. I would think there would be 3 of these 8 who would take the opportunity if offered it.
1) Shalene Flanagan 2:27:08 (Boston)
2) Renee Metivier Baillie 2:27:17 (Chicago)
3) Kata Goucher 2:28:08 (Boston)
4) Dot McMahon 2:32:11 (Chicago)
5) Jeannette Faber 2:32:37 (Twin Cities)
6) Deena Kastor 2:39:39 (LA)
7) Stephanie Pezzullo 2:32:42 (Chicago)
8) Stephanie Rothstein 2:32:47 (Honolulu)
Interesting that only 10 seconds seperates #'s 5, 6, 7 & 8
Dot, Faber, and Kastor is the team. Shalane, Kara and Renee will not take it.
DONE and DONE.
Where does it say they go down the list? From what's written above, they could pick anyone on the list in any order.
Jim Estes said they will be going down the list.
Also the person who accepts still must meet the minimum standards. So you could have a smaller team as well.
The selection procedures above must also follow the general guidelines of the Amateur Sports Act.

Can someone help me out here? I'm reading this wrong somehow. Performances from 6 Oct '12 through 5 May '13...that must be achieved between 1 Jan '12 and 5 May '13. What am I missing?

sounds like you have from 1/1/12-10/6/13 to run 2:17, then qualifying times are picked from marathons from 10/6/12-5/5/13
If you cant run 2:17 or 2:43 you don't deserve to even be considered
No up front money , no chance of winning money , why burn a marathon just to travel to Russia , a USA uniform doesn't cut it any more.

limiting the window to 5/5/13 to give time for USATF to do team paperwork and only going back to 10/6/12 to show "recent fitness" or somesuch illogical logic.
I always thought they put together a list of the current top 10 American marathoners.
Then went around asking everybody else if they were interested in running a marathon.
So who do we think will accept it for the men? I assume Ritz will pass. Trafeh? Vail? Eggleston is a yes? Would Hartman be interested?

Yes, we have sent 5 in the past and countries are still allowed to send 5. USATF has decided to only send 3 this year but they have not made a statement on that decision. I thought the point of USATF was to help promote athletes (and our sport) and help them gain experience? Sending only three seems a little ridiculous when we have many that have hit the standard.
Thoughts?

How big is the USAT&F support team I guess some one gets to be mens coach and womens coach and head coach plus asstant mens, womens and head coaches, equipment mgr, logistics co-ordinator, team trainer men, team trainer woman. Head of delegation, Team Doctor, USAT&F representative, director of team USA press relations and of course the 6 athletes. A nice round 20 sending 4 more athletes would require an asst head of delegation, asst logistic co-ordinator, associate trainer men, associate trainer women. Wow with a gang this size they have to get another press lip wagger and another Doctor on board. Before you know it USATF will have to charter a plane and if they are going to charter a whole plane might as well have a Board Of Directors meeting at the meet, after all they now have all those extra seats just going to waste....
