I started a thread earlier today saying that if Mo had stayed in the race today he could have won it. I think he could have, especially if he had hung back rather than following the leaders through 25k-30k in 14:30.
Why was this deleted? I see that a similar thread hypothesizing what Hall could have done is still up. And as I have pointed out, homophobic and racist drivel stays up all over this board.
And could Mo have won today?

I left to run after the viewer I was using kept having issues. When I left it seemed apparent E Mutai was going to win. When I saw the results, one of the first thingx I thought was exactly this. I know he'd never say it, but I bet Farah is thinking he could have stolen this race if he'd stayed in it.
That may be true, but you have no way of knowing (and even Mo himself does not know) how his body would have reacted in the late stages of the race. If often takes one or two marathons before you can get it right, and some runners find that they're just not made for that distance and are never able to get it right.

Hard to say. If he had hung back some after the halfway split then maybe. But at the same time we don't know what he has been doing as far as training, and whether he is really prepared to race a good marathon and have late race strength.
Dude. Dude. Farah is not going to have that problem. He weighs like 125 pounds max. He runs 150+ mpw for base, right? Dude. If he had hung back no question he could have closed in less than 1:04.
He might have won if he ran even splits, but there are many marathoners who could have won if they did that. Besides, keeping back from the leaders in the first part of the race would (presumably) have contradicted his original purpose for running. Even then, the guys who hung back slightly ended blowing up near the end, too.
It's hard to imagine a guy who hasn't run under 60 min for the half beating the best marathoners in the world at their own game. Admittedly, his halves so far have probably been training exercises, but he hasn't shown that he is in marathon shape yet.

but who's to say
he may not have stayed the distance
no chance mo wouda won
he didn't even make it to 1/2 way ( stopped ~ 100y from it )
his interview immediately after showed a guy in mild emotional shock
he was babbling on about he'd learnt biggest lesson of his life, missed his water bottle at 10k, etc
he coudn't wait to get out of that race as the 1st half had been brutal with that initial 5k
( this is a guy who when toying with 1/2M training ran 60'23 with a fast finish - a 61'30 shouda been child's play as he'd trained for it ( i reckoned he wouda been in mid-59 shape ), but he was so obviously relieved to have not been further involved
my take on the 1st 1/2 is that the rapid start & warm conditions ( it was hotter than official numbers ) is that they put in nearer a 60-flat effort on a cool day at even pace in that 1st half )
What did Mo end up running for the half? What were his spilts...?
He didn't make it to half way. Dropped out about 100yds early so there was no 1/2 split.

He was tucked right in the back of the lead pack the whole time from what I saw so what would have been 61:37. He stopped about 100 yards short of the official marker so he won't have a split there.
Why did he drop out at such a random point? He stopped very quickly and almost cut up a couple of guys in doing so.
It would have been awesome if he had pulled a Rupp and kicked for the 1/2 way marker while celebrating before coasting to a stop.
