I got around to wondering if I should change things up.
Last year I did lots of treadmill 5k's and intervals, got on the track early and did lots of 400's and 300's, and did hardly any weights. Lost 10 lbs, and performed pretty well. Developed achilles problem that never let me go 100%, and got a ham strain before the last meet where I wanted to go all-out.
This year I did just sporadic garbage stuff until a month ago. I've been going hardcore on the power stuff-- weights, box jumps, drills, 25m accelerations, fighting, lots of core work. Weights are huge again, as big as ever. Gained back the 10 lbs. Explosive stuff feels really good. Haven't been on an outdoor track yet, and haven't done more than slow tempo 150's indoors. Achilles are fine, nursing rotator cuff irritation from too-deep dips.
It will be interesting to see how I fare compared to last year. Even when I get out onto the track, I'm only going to do short stuff, and only at high speed. I think I will max out at 200m, and keep most of the stuff maxxed around 80-100m. Really going to work on translating this strength into power, working speed of contraction, high-speed coordination, and better concentration on middle acceleration and transition phases. Full power, no flaking.
It's nice to be a master's hack, you can be your own experimental subject.
