At the men's finish I checked Weather Underground. 48.9 degrees and 3 mph headwinds. And the fact that the pack often spread across the road shows the headwinds were not a big factor. But the men weren't much faster than last year when it was 40 degrees HOTTER. Why?
Tactical obv.
Who cares? The race played out in an interesting and we had an exciting finish...
Give me an exciting tactical race over a fast time any day, though getting both beats all.
Cause Ryan Hall wasn't there to rabbit the field, really. Surging back-and-fourth as they did is slower than running a steady pace.
Look at all the years Hall isn't in the field, this was on par with those.
It wasn't slow. Wasn't it around 2:03 just like so many people on here were predicting would be the new normal after Boston 2011?
It was slow! Only three men broke 2:12! Only three more broke2:14! If it were due to tactics alone a lot of guys should have been able to hang with the pack and finish strongly.

They didn't drop to 4:20 pace, mile 23 or 24 was 4:35 and that was downhill and the fastest of the day.
It seemed pretty fast for the Ham and Eggers that I was tracking. As others have said, it was just more tactical up front.
Dubai Marathon. Some of the top runners in the field ran Dubai. They had a short turn around for Boston. A flat out fast race would have been more difficult for them than a tactical race with a big kick at the end.

Sea breeze. Land warms up as the sun comes up but the water stays cold.
Dubai marathon so obviously short so no comparison with times there.

In 2007 no-one broke 2:14.
It was slow!!! In 1983 - THIRTY YEARS AGO, with NO KENYANS or ETHIOPEANS - ten men broke 2:12 compared to three today. Nine were Americans and one Canadian. And eight more broke 2;14 compared to three today. 7 Americans and one Canadian. And for that matter, four more Americans ran 2:14:21 or better.
The weather wasn't great today. Headwind most of the way - not real strong, but still headwind. Warm too with a string, warm sun. Not a great race day by any means.
Warm??? High 40s (compared to high 80s last year) is warm? Virtually all the fastest marathons have been run in the 45-55 degree range.
