i know it's not that exciting as a sport, but the commentary is just dull. they need some back story on leaders, a column listing the mile splits every now and then, interesting stuff like that.

That would cost money. Who's going to invest in TV Coverage of an event watched by a few thousand running geeks at 9:30 on a Monday morning?
I don't really follow the marathon at all but I had the stream on in the background. The commentary was laughably bad.
Kogo moves in to second place - "WE COULD HAVE AN ETHIOPIAN ONE-TWO HERE"
They were woeful at giving splits too.

i agree. i've always envisioned a great broadcast would include stationary cameras throughout the course, along with splits, so you could see who is in what position as they pass important parts of the course. you could tell if a guy/gal was in 10th place and looking strong, or in 10th and falling off the back. the way it is now is you just get to watch the leaders, which often leads to a snooze-fest. and then you don't see where everyone else is until the finish line.

That's why they have athlete tracking. Sign up for all the elites and you get to see their splits throughout the course regardless of whether they're still in contact with the lead pack or not.
If you stopped watching halfway through, don't worry you didn't miss anything. The Canadian won the men's race and the Portuguese won the women's.
You should have watched the entire race. The women's race was really good. It's a marathon not a half marathon.
Somehow in my tortured world I love watching and listening to marathon coverage. And yeah Al Trautwig and Larry are not the most compelling team, especially Trautwig, but it's all we got.
