Are the national champion/record breaking high school runners offered "full scholarships". This would mean full tuition, room and board, text books etc. Clearly XC/Track doesn't get a huge sum of money but I'm curious if the cream of the crop actually get full rides. It would seem more likely for the top women because of title 9.
It depends on the school, and their approach.
You'll see things all across the board.
But, since Title IX, most of what I have heard on the men's side of things is that guys are given partials.
Only foreign men get FULLS. It is absurd how many really good distance runners take small amounts to traditional XC schools just to say they ran for traditional powerhouse.
Yes, the type of kids you mention only have to pay for pizza on weekends.
at schools like stanford, how do athletic scholarships meld with the huge amount of financial aid available?
obviously for a runner whose family is wealthy, the scholarship is all that matters. but for someone who qualifies for ~$30k/year in financial aid, can the coach then just give that kid a partial to make up the difference, then the kid pays nothing and the team isn't losing too much of its available money?

This would be the case.
Absolutely not true. At Stanford, you either get financial aid or athletic scholarship. The two cannot be combined. There are no merit scholarships, and the athlete and family work with the coach and financial aid staff to chooses which will be best for the student/athlete. If the need based aid is better, the student takes that. If the athletic scholarship is more money, the student takes that instead
