I just watched the interview (http://www.distancepreps.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=31488&do=videos&video_id=84301) with his coach from the Embry Riddle meet...so disappointing.
Here's a kid that obviously has a shot at going sub-4 in the mile in high school, and last weekend he raced a great 800 on Thursday...and then came back Saturday to solo a 9:01 3200 (why?!?!?!?), is going to race another 3200 next weekend, and then TRIPLE 800-1600-3200 for their state series (for Florida, how many levels does that entail? League-District-State? More meets? Fewer?).
I know he would have to be race-sharp to go sub-4, but this reeks of a coach racing the snot out of a kid while he has him to "win" races and score points instead of continuing to focus on long-term development and giving him a chance to accomplish something rare and historic.
Have you ever thought his racing is fun for him? To be part of a team. He's running fine racing a lot.
Yes, you don't want to over do it but this kid is way better than everyone in Florida. How hard is it for a 4:04 guy to beat a 4:15 guy - not very.
In the grand scheme of things, who cares what you ran in HS (I say that unless you break 4 as then you are marketable).
