They said the same thing when Deriba Merga split a 21:51 in a half-marathon (yes) in February 2011. Leonard Komon's 8k split in his 10k WR is clearly better than both.

Everyone knows that 18 year old Gebrhiwet ran 21:08 last weekend at the Junior WCCC and that is the WR.

ventolin^3 equates this performance (with better pacing, on the track, with rabbits) to a 20:40.

So 20:40 is the 8k WR ... assuming 50.9 / 1:50.4 lines of fit.

I think because you can't set world bests enroute? You used to be able to do that and I think if it's a world best it should count.

Call me crazy, but 8k@21:54 is 4:24/mi. Extended to 10k that's 27:22. So would any sub 27:22 person have likely ran first 8k as fast or faster than 21:54?

Tadese's Half Marathon WR translates to 2:46/km so one would think that his average 8k in that race was 22:08 - 21:51 is basically taking aim at the half marathon WR. I have got to love how this one isn't kept officially as it should be very low in the 21s if it is.

I can confirm LPK's 10k record is 2:40.5/km so you would have an hypothetical 8k split of 21:24.

The course was certified for 8k in hopes that Koech would set the record. If the course isn't certified for the specific distance it doesn't count even if the runner hits the 8k mark at WR time.

Confuses two stats. He's run 12:48 and he's also run the Kenyan soil record (13:09).

All true. It's tough to convey the importance of a number to the hoi polloi and still retain accuracy for this crowd.

To explain the details would have required a full paragraph. There is no record as far as I know - can en route splits on course points which are properly certified (stand-alone 8k), validated (for record purposes), and timed . . . can they be recognized as records? Does anyone know the answer?

Truth be told, it was CERTIFIED for Castille, not Koech. The problem will lie in whether it can be properly VALIDATED. The race's course guy's first look (and I was in the middle of a trial on Mon-Wed so didn't think twice to double check) said it was not record legal for 8k.

Yes. Not sure I'd say that athletes routinely do this at our race, but it's not uncommon. Really, the 8k distance just isn't raced on legal courses, so I guess the record is really "Crazy 8s Course Record" rather than 8k world record, in reality.

Lani Rutto should get some props. His coaches said he was working out well - they were right. He helped make this race. Led at 3m (13:00).
