This is a bush league move but I tend to do it when faced with a little competition. I apeed up a little to let the oncomer know that my easy pace is faster than anyone elses easy pace. I'm willing to drop all the way to tempo pace to make my point. It may be childish but I don't take this lightly.
There has to be a name in the running lexicon for this speeding up.

Does this happen to you often? I can't remember the last time I had a chance encounter with any runner going faster than 9:00 pace.

Oh, come clean everyone. We all do this. For me the term is "antisocial". Everytime someone catches up to me when I am doing 7-7:30s, they want to chat or will run alongside me huffing and puffing as they try to hold the pace. If I want to chat on a run, I will meet up with training partners. Otherwise, my run is my quiet time--no kids, no wife, no co-workers, etc.
I literally never change my pace if someone is approaching me. I'm not insecure.
