Most trail runs are pretty long. Or did I miss the world trail 3k championship?
And most elite trail runners are nearly as elite runners (fitness wise) as the best track and x-c runners.
So I think you are barking up the wrong tree here.
A soccer player who also has a history as a top middle distance runner would excel (or vice versa. Many good mid distance runners have come from soccer backgrounds. For those that have, it's not like they would have completely lost those cutting and stopping/starting/accelerating abilities).
