Ok, times are not as fast as many on here so go easy on me! :-)
In my mid 20s and coming to the end of my second season of sprinting after taking it up 2 years ago. I have made big improvements this season and my current PBs are:
100m: 12.82 (-0.7)
200m: 25.62 (+1.2)
400m: 56.26
800m: 2:19.3
I've been focusing specifically on the 400m with regards my training. I probably should be 55 by now but have had a couple of poor races at the wrong time. My 800m time was using racing flats. I haven't done any specific 800m training. Everything has been 400m specific: gym and weights, short speed work (60m reps), speed endurance and aerobioc power (300m reps, 400m reps).
My coach thinks that I should do 800m next year and that he thinks it would suit me more. I think his thinking comes from the fact speed is harder to build than endurance, and I have slow acceleration (as can be seen in my slower 100m and to a lesser extent 200m times).. I always finish strong in 400m so he’s thinking that would translate into a good 800m and that I could run 2:10.
Having said that I much prefer the 400m training and the mix of speed, strength work in gym, and speed endurance. I don’t really like the look of 800m specific training.
Based on the info here which event should I be focusing on, the 400 or the 800?
