Did Stanford really just run 2 guys in the DMR to get 8th that just qualified in the Mile Prelims. You have to love to compete against decision makers like this.

Oregon women did the same...for 1 point. (I think)
Kroeger's only race this season was the 5k at the MPSF meet, so yes, you CAN be that dumb.
Why is Stanford so bad right now? Who is to blame for this?
Bad coaching decision, since Atchoo and maybe even Stutzman would have had a good shot to medal in the mile today if they hadn't run the DMR last night. Also, they ran Weissenbach in the 1200 of the womnen's DMR after she already ran an 800 prelim, and she died terribly. It could have paid off I supposed, but no matter how good she is, she's still just a freshman and it's tough to double at a national meet. They would have been better off with someone a little slower, but fresher.
Remember when Miles Batty won the individual indoor and anchored the winning DMR in 2011. Sometimes it is a good decision, but I realize if it is for 8th place, it's probably not worth it.
I give them props. They'll have plenty of time for individual glory. You don't have this for the team stuff as a pro.
It's a mess in Palo Alto and only getting worse. Don't know if its the admin or the little guy running the program... But when 1/2 of your upperclassmen quit because of the new coaches, they hire an ex track secretary/compliance staff to coach W-XC, and they "ask" their athletes If they "want to run indoors" then something is off.
Worse finish at NCAAi in 30 years.
Great job Milty. Keep it up. Good thing you know the AD. Gives us other schmucks in the PAC a chance.
Now go loose the big meet.
Stanford's AD is the same idiot who cut all the mens running program at Delaware when it was their 100th year anniversary and then left the next year.
Not great hires by Milty. Stanford women did not score a point? How is this possible. Men only 30th?
loose? Dumb much?

I think Miltenberg is saving his runners for spring. Think about it, he only ran ONE of his best female distance runners (Tonn). Kroeger could've score points. Maybe he made Chapus do a hard double on purpose, to make her grow as a freshman. In the future, she will probably have to do some hard doubles anyway, might as well have the girl get used to it.
Does he not have a history of making indoor a non-priority? If Miltenberg is doing this stuff on purpose Stanford might be able to score a handful of points in outdoor but if not...well...uh...
Also, half their upperclassman quit? I thought it was just that one female 400 runner?
"Also, half their upperclassman quit? I thought it was just that one female 400 runner?"
I've heard that at least ten athletes have quit the team, most citing the new coaching staff as the reason.
Chapus did not run at NCAA's. I think you mean Weissenbach--she doubled, running the 800 prelim, and the 1200 leg of the DMR in which she faded very badly. Kroeger only ran the DMR anchor leg because she didn't qualify for any other event, given that she only raced once indoors before nationals. So it wasn't like they were saving her for spring or anything. Kori Carter should have done better in the hurdles, but didn't even make it out of prelims. As for their other studs, like Cuffe, they must all be injured. Not sure how much you can blame the new coach for that, since some injuries might have already been in the making.
Not sure who you're referring to that quit, but on every team you will have a certain percentage of kids who quit when they realize they aren't any good, when they are injured too much and don't feel like fighting it, when they grow tired of the time commitment, or when they're seniors and have to focus on job or grad school applications.
I can assure you that Coach Milt is cleaning up the mess he found when he arrived in Palo Alto in September. Expect big things from the Cardinal this Spring and especially down the road. Haters.
I was on a national championship team for Oregon, but if my daughters get into Stanford, they are going to Stanford. Running ain't going to make money unless you are Jordan Hasay level or higher.
^ I agree with you. When Stanford and Ivy runners do well, they deserve special kudos in my opinion. The academic pressure can be really intense for all but the true geniuses, so it's hard to stay rested and healthy when the workload is that heavy and difficult. These athletes are themselves, and/or are going to school with, some of the brightest kids in the country--kids who've won international math competitions, who've started and already sold their own businesses (and I don't mean smnall lawn mowing or babysitting enterprises either), who've taken every AP test that exists, who have gotten perfect SAT scores, and who are already experts in something and have been hired as consultants to companies and governmental agencies.
So if these Ivy and Stanford athletes burn out mid season at a higher rate or quit more often than runners at average colleges, it's no one's fault. Say whatever you want about the likes of Oregon, Arkansas or LSU--they're not even in the same universe as Stanford's academic level.
Also, seems to me that the Washington girls had a really weak showing at NCAA's too.
^ agreed. Love when people say that all undergraduate degrees are the same. If they are all the same then why are these student athletes choosing to attend this university? So they can get the same "undergraduate degree" as Oregon/ Washington student athletes? I don't think so. It's because they are taking the path that will lead to them doing bigger and greater things with their lives. My hat off to them!

Agree with the poster above you who recognizes that athletes at Stanford are working harder than most student athletes due to the academic expectations, but wow, do you really see UO and UW in the same league academically? Compare the admission standards. UW is significantly more demanding academically. UO is where all the Washington kids who can't get into a decent Washington school go.

It's all the same in undergrad. The difference between these schools is their graduate programs. They are not working any harder or easier than a student at Oregon or Washington. Admission standards have nothing to do with the difficulty of the academics.
