I'm thinking of joining the military after I graduate high school. Although I doubt it makes me any less qualified, I currently have no background in self defense/ fighting skills. Would it be of any value for me to begin weekly karate lessons?

No. Depending on the branch you're enlisting in, it will help you to find out details on their expecations & physical training regimen and prepare/train accordingly.
You will be doing very little hand-to-hand combat type training, and what you do will be done their way. It won't be anything like karate.....
Yes if you are going into the Marines. Otherwise you aren't going to do any real fighting

which ever service you join will ensure you have the requisite skills needed to perform your duties. I will say that yes, it will in fact benefit you to have some fighting experience and be comfortable with close quarters combat/interpersonal violence since they will put you through it at boot camp (if you join the USMC or Army)
for what it's worth i was a skinny distance runner that had never been in a fight before joining the Marines
worry more about what MOS you are going to choose.
join the wrestling team.

Do it for the experience, and the culture, not necessarily for the combat training.
Wrestling seems a more "masculine" sport - perhaps more culturally similar to the military. Same for boxing.
Karate/TKD/aikido can be a little geeky. I suppose it depends on the school and the teacher.
