Daily Mail Reporting, Cops Say Oscar Pistorius Did Crush Reeva's Skull With a Cricket Bat

You sound almost pleased to report this news...

...I found out last night that my closest friends (who is from SA) niece was a friend of Reeva's. What I know about his family, I kind of thought it was likely someone in his family knew her...but the confirmation came as a more personal blow to an already monumentally sad story.

If Oscar is guilty I hope he finds a way to do himself in and end the world of hearing about him, and this horror, and let Reeva's family grieve in peace and move forward as best they can...

...I also asked my friend if it was possible that someone in SA could be so paranoid about a home invasion that they could react and do something like OP claims.

My friend said "Oh, yeah, are you kidding, my brother's house was invaded, they poured gasoline all over my brother's wife, saturated her with it, and then threatened to set her on fire unless they got the combination to the safe." His niece was able to hide in the garage, and call police, and there was a shoot out in the driveway, killing the invaders.

It is likely Oscar is guilty. I read an unconfirmed stat that the secured community he lived in had not had a break in in 5 years.

But...the Daily Mail is not the most reliable source. It could be true, but why not use that info to prevent such a dangerous person from gaining bail?

And especially after Botha screwed up so much...all they had to do was show pictures to the judge.

Either way, tragically, I guess we're going to find out...

I don't understand why he would tell the story he id if he knew he hit her in the head with the bat. Even if they police didn't present it in the bail hearing, he had to know they were going to see that in the autopsy. He couldn't be that stupid.

I don't know how he ever could have explained away a crushed skull anyway, but still he never should have told the story he did.

I don't see why it wouldn't be, but the day this all went down there was the story circulating that Reeva broke into his house that morning to surprised him on V-day, and the police said they had no idea where that story came from. Who knows where these papers get their anonymous tips.

Why is this police department entitled to any credibility right now? I don't have any personal knowledge to dispute this claim of course, but at what point can we just stop taking everything as fact just because the police said so? How much more incompetence do we have to see before we start taking police leaks and police reports with a massive grain of salt.

At this point it is the #1 story in the world, and they'll probably take their tips from anywhere...

People in S. Africa are concerned about crime. I went there in January and nearly every nice house has barbed wire around it. In Pretoria, taxis had a surcharge at night with the assumption it was unsafe to drive. While there I googled and quite a few US cities have higher murder rates than some S. African cities.

The more likely story is Pistorius murdered his girlfriend than he shot her thinking she was a burglar. Having said that, Pistorius just needs to create a reasonable doubt. "This could have happened" and I assume he walks from the premeditated murder charge unless the state can disprove it.

To the poster who asked, assume he did crush her skull, why would he tell the story he did? My response is, what other story is he going to come up with?

He might say it got crushed when she fell on the bathroom floor after being shot.

First there were rumors of the bloody cricket bat.

Then there were rumors that her skull was not crushed, that there were only bullet wounds.

The the story he used the cricket bat to bust open the toilet door.

Who knows.

This is going to sound racist, but it is simply true for a particular historical reason: there is a segment of South African society which suffers a disproportionate number of home invasions and murders - these are the people who are "concerned" about crime.

Of course, they are also the segment of that society who live in nice houses and drive nice cars, again for a particular historical reason. There isn't much point burgling a house with nothing nice in, or carjacking a junker.

So the overall murder rate isn't going to tell you much when it is only a very small part of the population which suffers.

One possible explanation is that he did't tell his lawyers everything that happened, and his lawyers drafted the affidavit in the most persuasive light they could in order to get him out on bail.

I am good friends with someone who knows Oscar well and had dinner with Oscar and Reeva one week before this horrible incident. She said that they seemed very relaxed and happy together. This is an incredible tragedy.

I didn't say it WAS racist, I said it was going to SOUND racist. The point is not that one race necessarily hates the other, but that a small segment of the population has a disproportionate amount of the wealth (for historical reasons) and, pragmatically, there is more mileage in robbing a house with nice stuff in it.

Thank you for the reading list, but I've lived in South Africa (both during and post-apartheid) and I visit regularly - I've no need for ill-educated polemic trash writing to know what life is like there.

Who's suggesting that? Of course, some aspects might not be so bad - they do have 11 official languages (of which English and Afrikaans are two) suggesting a level of integration (and perhaps forgiveness?) which might be of use in the US.

The Daily Mail has very little credibility and are prone to sensationalist journalism. I wouldn't rely on anything they print without it being backed up by multiple other sources

Do you think the prosecution appeared sloppy on porpuse to bait the defense into coming up with their story. If the defense thinks there is lack of evidence, they may include details that would obviously not have been included if there was proof.
